I'm reading all I can on converting a printer to dedicated black and
white. Unfortunately, I'm not able to reach any conclusions on the
suitability of one system over the other.

Can anyone give me a rundown of the competing systems and their
advantages/disadvantages?

At the moment, I'm leaning toward the piezotone system because it
seems straightforward and because the idea of doing split tones prints
apeals to me.

I'm not up to date on the piezography system anymore, since I went with the UT2 inkset from Paul Roark and inksupply.com. Having said that, the UT2 setup with a 1280 or the number of smaller Epson printers really can't be beat for value and quality. Certainly, the support for it is tremendous - a huge number of people are using this combination and inkset, so you can get a wealth of information about papers, what curves to use, how QTR interacts, etc.

What do you mean by split tone, by the way?

BO printing is used by a lot of people. I think Clayton Jones is kind of pioneer on the topic. You can google him up and find a lot of information.

The only problem I've heard about BO printing is that it takes a lot of work to get it just right, because of dithering and dots. But once you get it locked in, it can be far richer in the dmax than with the UT2 set, right off the bat. But then I get more tonal control with the UT2 set.
