What did Penn think of Avedon and vv?

I've read a fair amount about both Irving Penn and Richard Avedon but I've never encountered any description of what they thought of each other's work?

I realize that whatever rivalry they may have had was personal since both created exceptional bodies of work through their lifetimes, almost until their dying days. And both had successful families, children and marriages, were commercially and financially sound, and they had the respect of most everyone in the industry. I can't imagine them being adversarial but were they socializing as friends or cool acquaintances?

Any stories or links to such appreciated. Thanks

Interesting question. I would also love to know from anyone in the know!

Here’s an interesting transcript of the two discussing each others’ work:

I always had the impression that they were friends that had a healthy rivalry. One interesting thing to note is that Penn has taken Avedon’s portrait at least once but I can’t recall seeing it the other way around.

Thanks for posting this. Very interesting shop talk of the artistic kind. Bookmarked to finish reading it later.
