I know the Leica mechanical M cameras don't have intermediate shutter speeds between the engraved stops on the speed dial, but what happens if you set the shutter speed between stops? Does it set the speed that's closest to the pointer position or is it just random whether you will get the higher or lower of the two speeds?

I always thought you can set (and will get) intermediate speeds between 1s and 1/8s, between 1/15s and 1/30 and between 1/60 and 1/1000s. But you should not set intermediate speeds between 1/8 and 1/15 and also not between 1/30 and 1/60 (except for the flash sync speed there).

The oft overlooked and underappreciated brilliance of the M5 shutter mechanism: Precise, intermediate speeds anywhere on the dial. This function, coupled with the ergonomic perfection of the shutter speed dial, makes precise metering a matter of fact. 🙂

However, you didn't read that from me. I was never here. If everyone learns this information, the small stock of M5s will be gobbled up in a heartbeat. They will no longer be affordable. Y'all stick to your fixed step shutters and flare prone viewfinders. Leave the homely, huge, heavy bricks to those of us who don't know any better. 😱

ps: All said with tongue firmly in cheek. It's Friday.
