someone just suggested this topic in another (downbeat) thread...

today...i received my latest photobook. a snapfish publication from the flickr site. i had asked about them before here and had a couple printed. they turned out ok (for a 12.99 cdn. fee) and so i had another one done.

it's 20 pages of images from my weekly visits to the local farmer's market. it's an ok book, the contrasty shots don't look great but it's a good mix of colour and black and white and i like it.

the first book got good reviews from my friends and no one made comment about the quality of the paper, printing etc. but all who saw it generally had good things to say about it.

is it the same as a great review from the new york times? no, but in my world it was a hit.

i like these little theme books and it's great motivation to find other projects.

It's nice to have something to do with your photographs—makes the whole process seem more worthwhile. I've never made a book, but get a similar feeling posting photos in online communities and making small prints in the university darkroom to show to my friends. Sometimes it's enough just to look up and see a photo you're proud of hanging on a wall.

I've been thinking of Blurb lately just to have my personal favorites at the coffee table for friends and family...
The reason I've held off is that I wanted to have a book with some direction and not just snaps of places here & there (unless the direction is exactly that: "Snaps of Places Here & There").

...I've been to the Strathcona Farmer's Market a couple of times and there are plenty of photo ops around that area - both north and south of Whyte Ave...

Last year a photog here in Calgary made a book called "YYC" (Calgary airport code), which turned out pretty nice. It was a collection of photos from local photogs both amateurs and pros that depict this city in a different light. Maybe he'll make one up north in Oiler-town since he's moved there last year.

the first 2 i did were general shots, one book was b&w and the other was colour. the snapfish ones can be as small as 20 pages and can have 1,2, or 3 images per page (maybe 4). i got the 5x7 size books. they are great for the living room coffee table or your desk at work.

thanks for posting this. i've been waffling on having one of these books printed for my wife's upcoming birthday and you just gave me the push i needed to finish it.

glad to be of some help...they are too cheap to pass up. i had 2 of the same book printed and paid an extra buck for 2 day shipping. i think i made it on the 29th and got it in the mail today. hp does the printing and i am assuming they have one or several printers in each participating country. all mine came from the same printer in eastern canada.

This morning I finished reading up on some articles about TTL flash photography...later I went with my daughter to The Barn where she rides...I took some shots of the horses and other interesting light...right now I'm finishing up three rolls of film...two were LegacyPro 400 shot and developed normally and the third was a roll of Neopan 400 shot @ 800asa developed in Rodinal 1+100 for 23 min.
