Hello,

I have Tele-Elmarit-M(TE) 90mm F/2.8 Black Thin-Version which says "MADE IN GERMANY" on the name ring.

I have seen many TE 90/2.8 that are made in Canada but this is the first and only one that I've seen which is made in Germany.

KEH has one in stock but listed much more expensive compare to ones made in Canada...

Can some one tell me some characteristics of this lens?
Is it any different from ones that are made in Canada?
If it is, how is it differ?

I was looking for one-stop faster Elmarit 90/2 but E90/2 is bigger than TE90/2.8 so I decided to give TE90/2.8 a shot and see if it is good enough for my style.... But I would like to know more about my equipment.

Thank you.

Peter.

There's no faster Elmarit. All Elmarit lenses have a max aperture of f2.8.

As for Canadian or German... that's a matter of preference (or snobism). I believe collectors drive the price of German stuff higher than it really should. Canadian-made lenses and cameras are just as good.

Take care!

For the most part there is no difference between Canada & Germany in the quality. There may have been one instance early in the production of one of the Ms. I am not sure. But, as far as the lens under discussion there is none. When you check comparisons on various sites by experts you will find that they do not differentiate between Canada and Germany and we should not either. Let me at something about f2.8 v. f2.0. I rarely ever get down to f2.0. In portraits I try to stay about f5.6 because I expect to have some control of the lighting and the subject therefore the faster f2.0 is not necessary.

About 5% of earlier "thin" TEs suffered from etching inside the sealed rear two elememts, effectively ruining the affected lenses. I believe the last batch was made in Germany so you probably have a late one. There should be no optical difference between Canadian/German samples. Waileong is correct, the lens is susceptible to flare - a hood does help and it is a great little travel and portrait lens. Below is an old shot with mine from my gallery.

Thank you very much for all of the comments on TE90.
I really like the size of it!
For now, I will not worry about the Canadian vs. Germany and keep shooting~

peter_n: that is a beautiful B&W picture of the girl.

Thanks again.
