Hi, Leica noob here.
My new M3 (953xxx) was described on eBay as having a "non-original take up spool, but works fine".

Is this, as I think, the spool from a quick-loading kit without the rest of the kit? What are the implications of this? I just shot my third roll and had no problems loading film so far.

I always removed the spool and loaded the film with the leader fed into the spool outside of the camera.

It is the spool from a quick-loading kit.

What's missing is an addition to the baseplate that pushes the film into the spool. Not really needed on the M3 since you have to pull the spool out to reset the counter anyways.

As long as you push the film into the spool with your hand, as is, your camera is fully functional. I find the QL spool easier to load anyways.

Exactly, it's an (original) quickload spool but without the baseplate part.
Google "Leica quickload kit" and you'll find plenty of pictures what the whole set looks like.

You can basically just drop the film into the spool (counter-clockwise!) without removing it from the camera, close the bottom plate and you're ready to go. It makes more sense when used on a M2 though as there's no automatic counter reset 😉
