manfroto tabletop telescoping w/ leitz head.
http://www.amazon.com/Manfrotto-3007KIT-Table-Tripod-Extension/dp/B00009R6CU perhaps discontinued, but available in parts....
http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=manfrotto+table+top&x=0&y=0
Not totally stable with a heavy camera and fully telescoped. Probably equivalent to the leitz setup with the telescoping part removed.

The Ultrapod II is unbeatable for small size, light weight and stability: 210g with head vs. 240g for the Leitz without a head.
After that, I'd go for a carbon-fibre Redged: 1 kg for the legs, plus whatever head you put on it. Max height about 60 inches (head included). As Redged disarmingly put it, "Our tripods aren't as good as Gitzo, because they are the best in the world, but if you can't afford a Gitzo, ours are pretty good."
Bear in mind that I get to see a lot of tripods, because Frances covers them for Shutterbug magazine. I thin we have 15-20 tripods between us.
Cheers,
R.

I use a Manfrotto table tripod. It works good for me: http://www.manfrotto.com/product/8374.58969.76910.0.0/MTT2-P02/_/TABLE_TRIPOD_WITH_PHOTO_HEAD

Might be a tad large to fall into the 'mini' category, but I have the Velbon DF-Mini. The head leaves a bit to be desired, but for a super cheap tripod, it's not bad. It was $18 new.
I like that it was cheap and can handle the weight of my bronica and f3 with md4.

If I'm taking photos for the classifieds. I generally use a paper towel roll w/ lots of paper towels on the roll for cushioning. If it's a still life, I prop the camera on the kitchen table chair back or use the paper towel roll. Works well down to 1/2 second.

Etsumi...that's all it says...it's the name brand of the tripod...no model number
I found this one at a flea market in Barcelona...it came with a leather case...
Black & chrome...all metal...pretty sturdy for it's size...

I currently have two.
Leitz bottom and both the large and medium head. I use each for different reasons. The large when I want a chest pod for SLR/Large Lens combo, the medium for RF work, though the large saw more time.
My favorite for the price is the Minolta TR-1. Not as heavy as the Leitz & Large combo, about the same size and every bit as stable. It came out in the early days of the Leica / Minolta relationship. I had two, sold one here a few years back.
Have to admit that most time these days I use backs of chairs, street poles, tables, what ever I can find.

I have one of those Manfrotto tabletop tripods with the mini ball-head in my camera bag. Only ever used it once but I'm glad I had it for that one occasion.

Leitz with small ballhead. I can still flex my neck enough to use it as a chest pod if necessary. The worry is where to put it in luggage. I am too scared to carry it on an aeroplane, as folded it would look vaguely gun or at least weapon shaped on an X-Ray.

Roger; The Redged TSC 424 looks like something I could use. I couldn't find a NA dealer. If you talk to them ask if they have plans to sell in the US or Canada. I have 2 Gitzo Studex Compac, they are great but 4-5 Kg sans head. I would like to have a 1Kg for my personal film cameras. Tnx, pkr
That's the one I have. At photokina 2010 (their first) they reckoned they'd justify the show if they found distributors in 4 countries. They left with leads for over 20 countries, USA and Canada included. It'll take a few months, of course, before it's all set up. But keep checking their site -- or consider buying direct from the Netherlands, if you're in a real hurry.
Cheers,
R.

Count me in the Leitz camp with tripod and ballhead.
Mine has survived five relocations and +50 years of use.
Still rock solid.
