Soft coatings, soft glass, haze? All of the above?

Haze in the front group seems to be common on the 2.8 Elmars, but it is fairly easy to care of.
The fingers that lock the lens in the taking position can weaken and unlock when the aperture is selected, but that is dangerously but quickly corrected by someone who knows.
What bothers me most is the weight of the collapsible portion makes it fall open easily, and I don't know if that condition is able to be corrected.
These conditions sure make the 3.5 Elmar look superior, if not correct for a IIIg.

There is a felt seal in the mount round the barrel. If the felt is hardened by age the lens barrel can get sloppier. It is an easy fix for them who know how.

Hi,
Looking at the prices they ask these days I'd look for a dealer giving a 12 month guarantee.

Off topic but there is a 50mm 3.5 Elmar in M mount on Ebay. An uncommon and excellent (I am told) lens.
No connection etc etc

Yes, and fungus of course. State of the aperture blades, ease of focusing. The lens likely will need a CLA anyway .

Good points here. I was not aware of the felt seal in the lens barrel, but it makes sense since the action is obviously not metal on metal.

Does anyone know of the steps to replace the felt seal?
