Where can special enlarger bulbs be found

Also for the darkroom lamps??

How many years will a red lamp provide fog free light?

Can a Beseler 45m be manualy raised and lowered if the motor gives up?

Its working perfectly at the moment but its not a new one

Freestyle might have it but you would have to check all their bulbs or call and ask. All I saw at a quick glance was a 4x5 dichro bulb.

You can also try some red LED light bulbs as safelights. Most are only emitting a very narrow spectrum of red light, so they should be pretty safe with most papers (I didn't test for fogging, but I had none so far).

The spectrum of red LEDs isn't always so narrow. You can get some idea by looking at the light reflected in the underside of a CD which acts as a diffraction grating. I was surprised by the amount of yellow and aqua in my powerful home made LED safelight (which wasn't safe enough). I now have another home made one with extreme red LEDs (660nm) and that is safe at a fairly bright level. But the extreme red is not easy on the eyes even at a high level. I have a home made orange hand held one which I use to check the progress of paper development and going from deep red to orange is a delight (but not safe for general use).

My comments relate to VC papers. In the old days of graded paper safelights could be much easier on the eyes.

I have two 19th century red darkroom bulbs plus two lamps with 18th centuary tungsten white bulbs @ 20w
With great care they may last a very long time

Ebay can be your friend for buying bulbs...do your homework see what the price range is for the bulb you need...look for someone selling multiples of the same bulb, you'll most likely save on buying in bulk plus in shipping...last time I bought six at one time for a great price...
You'll also find the Beseler parts needed there too...new or used they are still out there...pretty sure I just saw a Beseler 4x5 motor assembly for sale recently on ebay...
I look for the best quality darkroom bulb that I can find...there are cheaper bulbs but the coating may not be as good and could cause fogging...
If you feel there's a need to do preventive maintenance on the enlarger do it now while you can still get parts...the new parts should last for years depending on how much you're using the enlarger...I've had one of my enlargers over thirty-five years and all it's ever needed was a new bulb...but then it doesn't get abused...if you don't know the complete history of the one you have start replacing items that get the most use...

Don't think I would want to move that head up and down manually on the motorized models, but I don't think the durability of the motor will be a problem. I used an MX for for over 30 years, heavily, every day, and never had a problem with the motor.

Great enlarger.

+1

While you can move the head carriage up and down manually by turning the knob on the motor housing, it takes a lot of turning to move very far.

In the some 25 years that I sold Beselers I never heard of any motorized 45 having an issue with the motor and the motorized 45 models were up to 10+ years old when I started in the business.
