I'll have to qualify my answer that it's "did shop" rather than "do shop". My days of buying any kind of film-only camera goods are over (and sadly that includes Leica lenses because I'm not likely to ever risk major money on a digital M). There was a time when I shopped some of the major dealers (Chatterton, Kuehl, Tamarkin, Shoshan, Kurland et al) but their prices on used equipment was always on the high side and they haven't seemed to keep pace with the falling market. I used to stop into every mom and pop camera store as I travelled around the US by car, but most of those shops are either out of business, or no longer buying any film equipment, or ebay has choked off their supply of incoming trades (a lot of people would rather go to the bother of ebay rather than take 50 cents on the dollar or less). My last purchases were from KEH. Despite all the stories of great deals found on ebay, that's the one place I'd never buy anything. I've seen too much junk go for way too much in the last few seconds of frenzied bidding. Luckily, being on a slow dialup, I never stood a chance to win anything there. The best prices I've seen have been private parties advertising on forums such as this one.

I shop the Bay and here. I've pondered getting things from Keh bofore but never done it. They have good bargains once in a while. If I get another Nikon SLR I may go with one from there.
Also, do note that I may be in the market for one in the next couple months. I'm wanting a user condition FE-2. I'm also wanting the AI 50/1.4. NOT the AIS version. The AI is said to be sharper and, while I haven't used the AIS version, I can say that mine was pretty damn sharp. If you guys see one of these for a decent price let me know.

For me, in order, it is KEH, here, ebay, & my FLCS. I am such a believer in KEH that it isn't even funny. Everytime I have bought something from them it has been of thier "bargain" grade and everytime it has been far beyond my expectations. Perhaps I am spoiled by the "minty" bits on ebay, but I'd really rather spend a few dollars more and have something I can use out of the box...
Edit: Stephanie, given the kind of budget you have, a place like KEH is your friend. Yes, it may well cost more short term, but you will have some level of warrenty (and they will take back for any reason I've ever heard) and in the end you have, simply, the peace of mind that what you get will either be exactly what you expect or better. This is not a small thing...

If you don't buy film cameras - why did you join this thread anyway? Should we care that you don't buy used film cameras anymore? Does this mean you only buy used digitals? I don't understand your post.
But anyway....I love eBay. I love the challenge of finding a "newbie" seller that no one will touch because of his low numbers; thus getting a "deal" while helping her "establish her cred".
l also love the "established" e-tail sellers who know what their gear is worth and put realistic BIN prices on it. Oh boy, one more F3HP to go - hear me Betteroffblu?
So long as a seller takes PayPal I love them.
That's my one key requirement - because b/w PP and my CC I am protected!
I am so glad so many of you here hate eBay (and I love to read all of the monikers you use "ePrey" is the best). Please keep "raggin' on it". Please help convince all RFF'ers, and film camera buyers in general, that eBay is BAD, BAD, BAD!!!!
You help to keep the competition down!
Hating eBay is like hating the NYSE or NASDAQ - how can you "hate" an "exchange"?

Actually I could argue that the NYSE _has_ held developement back, however that's an arguement best done over focusing fluid so we can see each others faces. With luck, perhaps, someday... ?

William,
You're on for the liquid solution - we need to find a venue.
All I mean is that an "exchange" is simply a vehicle to bring a willing buyer and willing seller together.
If your a "scorned" buyer you can hate the seller.
If your a "scorned" seller you can hate the buyer.
But how can you hate the "exchange"? It is simply a mechanism.
eBay is just an "exchange" - nothing more.

George

Yeah, that's where I'll get the FE-2, most likely. I'm just hoping that they have their bargain grade black ones for a while. I was also hoping to find a bargain grade AI lens...but it looks like I'm going to have to bite the bullet on that one.

Yeah, I've got that problem looking for an used EF 50/1.4 at a sane price
Still, I think they are good for someone in your spot overall.

I like your use of (snippers) - it shows that you "edited".

Maybe a "scissors" icon would be a good tool?

I've been on the net longer than some here have been alive. I wasn't around for the great renaming, but that's about all I missed... That's scary on a number of levels... So I learned a very long time ago to show edits. But I do like the idea of a Scissors "smiley" - and it sure couldn't hurt.

Beware of ebay...I just got notified there's been activity on my credit card, and it certainly wasn't me...what a pain.
But a bigger pain is guys who come on this forum to innocently drop (ostensibly, anyways) derogatory comments like "of course, I would never be so stupid as to buy film equipment now, but if I did...."
There's a reason they can't just leave us alone......might have something to do paying big coin for something that'll be worthless is a year or two. If you think I'm wrong, just check out ebay for used prices on D70 kits that went for $1500 just a few months ago.
But you know what? D70's are damn good cameras......but I love film, and I'm not out there trolling digital forums, calling them shallow believers in clever marketing schemes and suckers for the planned obsolescence game. I have better things to do, and no axe to grind.
From what I understand, movies are still shot on film, and 100 ISO negs still have more info than a D70 shot. Maybe I'm naive, but staining a high grade film with light seems to be a simpler and more direct method of reproduction than sensors and whatever else goes on inside a digital camera...but I'm sure the 39MP Hassy for $30,000 will blow anything away...
But really, who cares? My father's M3 (now mine) has been making people look beautiful for 50 years now. I'm happy......maybe that's why I don't waste my time baiting digital camera users on forums I have no business on.
