Many people (like me) have the day off in lieu of tomorrow, Jan. 1. That may explain it.

To answer that literally, Oxfordshire, UK. My Canon G-III arrived today, first rangefinder. I found this site a few days ago while researching the various models I was encountering on Ebay
Freya, welcome to the RFF.

Welcome to the RFF. A word of caution: rangefinder cameras multiply and you don't even need two of them for it to begin!Freya said:To answer that literally, Oxfordshire, UK. I'm in Rochdale, in the UK. Thats near Manchester for those who have never heard of it. Wish I was somewhere sunny. It's grey and miserable today.

Paul - great picture-taking weather, eh? Sunny is terrible. Nobody wants sunny. Over-rated, really. Here's something to cheer you up...you made me think of this. I have had too much sugar, I suspect.

Grey Day - Madness
When I get home it's late at night,
I'm black and bloody from my life,
I haven't time to clean my hands,
Cuts will only sting me through my dreams.
It's well past midnight as I lie
In a semi-conscious state.
I dream of people fighting me
Without any reason I can see.
In the morning I awake,
My arms my legs my body aches,
The sky outside is wet and grey
So begins another weary day.
So begins another weary day.
After eating I go out,
People passing by me shout.
I can't stand this agony
Why don't they talk to me?
In the park I have to rest
I lie down and I do my best,
The rain is falling on my face
I wish I could sink without a trace.
In the morning I awake,
My arms my legs my body aches,
The sky outside is wet and grey,
So begins another weary day.

You got it, Bill! Describes my life perfectly. Most people, including those outside the UK know that the manchester area is famous for it's rain. This year however seems even worse than others. It seems to have been grey most of the time. We don't seem to have seasons anymore, they just all blend into one. No wonder I suffer from arthritis!
Anyway just a few weeks and I'm off to Lanzarote and if there's any sun there I may even go wild and take my coat off!

Paul,
Take your coat off? Completely mad.
Next you'll be off to Majorca, drinking Watney's Bleeding Red Barrel Beer and going on about...

Thanks all for the welcomes! And I'll bear in mind the uncanny replication abilities of rangefinders!
Quick question - once I've replaced the seals, what film(s) would you recommend to make the best of a G-III's characteristics and limitations? I want those first few rolls to make me happy

It's beautiful and sunny here
(Repairs on our house began last week. After the tragedy in SE Asia I'm thankful I live where we only have hurricanes.)

Limitations? What Limitations?
The only limitation I can think of is the 1/500th shutter and f16 aperture, which can cause problems in bright light if you don't have the right film. If you're used to using them fancy new fangled space age SLRs with their auto this and auto that and 1/8000th shutters, you probably didn't have to worry about this
Personally, I would recommend Fuji Acros 100 or Ilford Pan F 50 if shooting in bright light. Both are B&W, for color I usually use whatever I can find really cheap.
Any 100 speed film should work outdoors and most 400 or 800 films should work indoors. This is asuming you are using the shutter prefered auto mode. If you use it in manual mode you can get even more out of it. I often use 3200 speed film. You just set the film speed to 800, take a reading in auto mode, then switch to manual and bump it up two stops.
Welcome to the forum and enjoy the Canonet!
In keeping with the original idea of this thread: I was born is Boston, MA, but have been living in Tulsa, OK since I was 4.

I'd still rather be in Boston than here Peter! It's just started raining yet again and the forecast is for gale force winds! I live in a sheltered housing complex for the elderly (No I'm not quite that old yet...only 47). My wife is Warden there and one of our ladies is in Boston now visiting her daughter and family. She flew over a couple of weeks ago and she's 96!
