These are a couple of mirror-portraits (heavily cropped) from Daido Moriyama's latest book, "The World Through My Eyes."

Does anyone know which camera this is? I know in recent years he used various Ricoh GR and GR-digital cameras, but I think these pics are from the 60's or 70's.

The fact he used a Pen-W explains a lot. Scale focus, no meter, half-frame... that's why his shots were out of focus, poorly exposed, and grainy! (Not like that's a bad thing of course. 🙂

As far as i know, he used the W for that book only. The attributes that you describe are of course mostly products of his technique (incl. some very heavy cropping). Any of the Pens of that ilk are very capable picture-taking machines, though i can certainly see your point.. 🙂

I have an issue of Nippon Camera from 2008, in which there's an article that has pictures of all of the cameras that he's used over the years matched to each specific publication. Pretty slick.

any chance of getting a scan of that article up? 🙂

Would love to see a scan of that article as well.

And just in case you are looking for one, those Pen W's are near impossible to find. I think they made like 5 of them (slight exasperation).

Been thinking lately that phone cameras are sort of the modern day equivalent.
