I want to buy a 400asa film but i want??Would like fine grain as well as a good tone range,that is not just black OR white,

Which is the best??Ilford Kodak or Agfa??Or another???

B or W is what i get with color developed at a local shop which---sent to Germany where all the detail is washed out and shadows are solid
