I'd like to use M42 lenses on my EOS 40D. Some eBay sellers are selling adapters for 25 bucks or so that will allow focus confirmation--has anyone used these? I usually shoot aperture priority with my DSLR, I understand this should work fine with an adapter.

recommendations appreciated!

Hi;
I bought one from a seller in Hong Kong, I can't recall his handle right now, however, it is too deep for the camera body, and doesn't work.

I bought one about 7 years ago in NYC for $17.00 and it works perfectly with my 50mm f1.4 Super Takumar on any of my EOS's. It is a screw mount not a K mount.

The adapters usually work fine in most respects. I've tried various adapters, with and without focus confirmation, for Contax, Pentax, Nikon, and Leica, mounted on a Canon 5D.

But, no matter which lens or which adapter, i get weird, inconsistent focus results. Even when the viewfinder shows a sharp image, and the focus confirmation light is on, the resulting image can be wildly out of focus. So much so, that i have to search the image to find out just what WAS in focus. These issues are not predictable, but occurred on maybe 1 out of every 5 shots, on average. These were all with the standard focus screen. I have since changed to a different screen, supposedly optimized for manual focusing, but have not tried to use adapters with it. I just don't see the point any longer. The experience with trying all of those lenses proved fruitless, and made me appreciate the Canon glass i have (35L, 50/1.4, 85L). The only lens that impressed me was the Contax 50/1.4....

That said, you should buy your adapter from someone that offers a return policy of some sort. Look at the sites of dvdtechnik.com, and fotodiox.com. I've bought items from both. The ebay adapters i've bought have been hit or miss, and i couldn't recommend any of them — what you get may depend on what they have been supplied with That Week.

Just get the cheapest one with AF-confirm. They all use the same chip, just epoxied onto an M42 adapter. They work fine. There's nothing not to work as long at the chip is making contact with the camera properly.

You get nothing better for the extra money.

Just set your 5D to use the center focus point only, turn off everything else in the menu.

i got the M42 one from roxsen and it works wonderfully with AF confirm.It reach the infinity focus.
I've also got the nikon to canon eos AF confirm and it's a litlle more difficult to use,hard to put in place and remove.There's no manual with those adapters, there's a special pin to remove the lens from the adapter i didn't know it and almost break my lens thinking it was stuck to it.So be carefull with those adapters, some of them are quite technical to use , ) but they work fine and are cheap.
