why does this 35RD cost so much?

 Well, it is "a gorgeous OLYMPUS 35 RD rangefinder camera," and "this camera is completely functional;" but "there are bright marks around the tripod mount, slight brassing of the battery cap slot and the black painted trim has minor paint flaws.

In conclusion, "using the ICSC grading scale of cosmetic/functional condition, this rare 35 mm rangefinder rates close to a 3D." :bang:

:(

I don't think this one will sell even at the minimum price, but if it does, it will be to someone who just can't resist and says "Oh well, what the heck." Most RDs suffer from oil on the shutter blades, and a CLA will cost about $100. An RD rarely goes for under $125-150, even without a guarantee of operative shutter. So maybe the seller is figuring that, bright marks and all, this is not a bad price, if at the top of the price range.

The seller has a 100% rating, but I'd still be nervous spending this much on an RD without hands-on examination.

oh i wouldnt even consider it since i found my old one at a thrift store and had it CLA'd by one of our own. Gman :)

That's my strategy: Find one for real cheap and send it for CLA. But I'd be willing to break the bank for one in original black!

yeah ORIGINAL black would be nice of course. but i wouldnt object to having it painted. it would be a shooter afterall

To the best of my knowledge the 35RD did not come in black - just chrome.

I went through an Olympus RF collection spreee and have every model (even three black 35SP's and two 35UC's....). Nice cameras and the G.Zuiko (7 elements) lens really shines.

Rich: You are likely right, but I have seen a couple of Trip 35s in black. I don't know if that was factory original, but they looked REALLY nice, so I sort of figured that if a lowly Trip 35 was produced in black, surely an RD must have been. Oh well, chrome painted black with a proper job of it would do it for me. As for the UC ... sigh. I want it mostly for its scarcity. Actually I like the look of the SP(n) better than the UC, but a black SP would be da bomb for me.

Yup the Trip came in black as well. I have two of them in black I think and one in chrome.

The 35SP's are nice - here is a photo of my three black ones:

So if I put an RC up, $35 oughta be pretty reasonable? Some marks on the front element. Replaced the seals, looks like everything works, about EX with little "pecks" near the lugs. Just do not have time to test with film.

I'm looking for an RC to serve as a parts camera. I have one that is a bit wonky at 1/125 and has been dropped so it has a ding on the top. The glass is perfect.

This one seems to work well. The lens looks like it should be fine, if the "marks" bother you, the entire module must be replaced and aligned to the RF. $35+9 for shipping to Canada via Air Letter Post, Paypal OK. Let me know.
