When inspecting closely again as suggestet by Shootist I indeed found tiny marks and debris on the inside of the lens as well on the top of the camera roller. I have in the meantime bought a 1998 50mm Summicron which works perfectly - as does my 28mm Summicron.
Please relate to picture at the bottom of this post.
The diffrence between the old 50mm (1973 AFAIK) and the new 1998 model (when addressing this problem) is (I am pretty sure) relatet to the different setup of the focusing cylinders that contact the roller on the camera. There is a 3mm diameter difference, or in effect the "old" cylinder ha a 1.5mm wider contact point on the roller. I dont know the size of the roller on the M8 - or indeed on other Leicas - but on the R-D1 its 3mm, so a 1.5mm difference is substantiel.
Or as Shootist puts it: "Sounds like the roller on the arm in the camera that moves the rangefinder is not hitting the cam on the lens correctly"
I suggest this difference is introduced when the new 50mm Summicron was introduced, in 1994. For other lenses this might be an issue as well, and might explain "unexplainable" incompatabilities.
Cross posting to the Leica forum.
Kind Regards
Niels
