Though a few of us here have the contax g, you may have better luck over at www.contaxg.com. Lots of post from 28, 21, and even the 16. I only have the 35, 45, and 90 so I can't help you. Then come back here and show us some of your shots with the 45.

Regards,

Scott

I've the 28mm. It's awesome, of course. I'm looking for a 21mm.

There is no "bad glass" for that particular rangefinder.

Ok. Looking at your post, I am going to make some suggestions.

First off, bothe the 28 and the 21 are AWESOME lenses. The 21 is a little more specialized, but that is about it.

Now comes the big question. Can you see yourself using a viewfinder on top of your camera, or imagining 21mm while looking through a 28mm viewfinder? If no buy the 28.

Do you want extreme wide? If no, buy the 28.

Do you want the best lens in the catagory ever built? Buy either:)

Currently, my carry lens is my 21, sans viewfinder.

I love them both. Now I just have to find a 16mm... then a G2... then a zoom. Then I will have no more G excuses...

The 35/2 is inferior to the 45. Sharpness isn't as uniform and impressive. It's a handy and fast lens, though, and relatively easy to come by. The 28/2.8 is a bit slower and, according to what I've read, a better performer.

If I were to get a wider lens (I own a 45 and a 35), I'd get the 28mm. With the wider glass you need accesory viewfinders.

Good luck!

Hi Durian,

I've got some photos in my gallery shot with the 28mm. I love that lens simply because it is a focal lenght I am most comfortable working with. Yes at f/2.8 it can be a little slow at times, but I've gotten by with much low light conditions.

But I do have to admit that the best photos have come out of my 45mm.

As to which to choose between the 21mm and 28mm. I would say first look at how much mone you have to spend. If I remember correctly, the 21mm is almost double the price of the 28mm. So if you have a budget, it would make sense to go with the 28mm. Oh and yes, be aware that if you choose the 21mm, you would be using and external viewfinder.

If you are really sure that you like super wide-angle. By all means, go for the 21mm! Can't go wrong. Haha, of course I am looking into adding one into my collection one day. Can't go wrong with any Carl Zeiss optics.

Cheers,
Susie

Here is an example from yesterday evening in available darkness at f2.8 and 1/15th. Nothing spectacular as I just wanted to fill the film and try some things with the last rolls of APX400 and the last bottle of Rodinal.

The 35mm planar is far from inferior!!!!! Actually it is one of the best f2.0 35mm.
Certenly as you consider the very small size of that juwel. It's true at f2.0 sharpness and contrast can improve And it does improve at f2.8 it's already sharp in most of the centre. At f4.0 the lens is already at it's best. Very sharp and contrasty

jaap, the 35 is inferior to the 45, but not as much as you can easily see it in shots not including a resolution chart ;-)

There really is no bad G lens, and some are tremendous (like the 45). I wouldn't consider the 35 if you're looking for a wide, because it's not wide enough. The 21 is too wide, and very expensive relative to the other prime G lenses. Get the 28; it's a great lens, and very reasonably priced these days.

When I had a G2 system I loved my 21mm even using the viewfinder. Fantastic lens. It's the only thing I misss about the G system.

Early this year I bought into the Contax G system primarily for the fast sharp 21mm lens, and it has not disappointed. Now I have all but the 16mm and the zoom, and they're all outstanding lenses, a truly great series! My favorite focal lengths are 35/40 and 28, so the two Contax lenses I use most are the 35 and 28mm. I cannot dispute those who say the 28 and 45 are the two best of these, and though I've heard others say the 35 is the least of them, it's still a beautiful lens in my experience. The 45 is actually 46.9mm, and since I'm more accustomed to 40, the 45 (like 50) seems "long" to me. :)

As to the 28 and the 21, their angles of view are very different. The 28 is a widely useful carry lens for me, while the 21 requires shifting mental gears to "superwide mode", and is harder to use, more specialized. Wide enough that I consciously try to avoid common superwide cliches, playing to the wideness as a subject. Of course it's fun to explore the possiblities too... ;)

Here are three 21mm Biogon shots... Followed by two 28mm Biogon shots. Hope these might aid decision... :)

I bet you own a planar 35mm ;)

Yes, but only recently. I got it because I changed to often between 28 and 45 and the one stop over the 28 comes in handy, too.

I like it a lot!

My last buy was the 28mm. I bought this jewel just for 160 euro. After some dealing on a photogear market in Doesburg here. Although it was without papers and box, but with a filter an a sunshade. I though it was a good buy for one of the very best 28mm and am very happy with it.

I'd recommend the G28/2.8. It's affordable, convenient, and the optical performance is superb. 28mm is a very useful focal length, anyway. I think G body with G28 & G45 is a perfect light-weight street/travel kit.

On the other hand, I don't hunt for a G21, simply because I've already been fine without it. (I also own G35, G45, G90-- sure all are excellent, too.)

G1 & G28, Fuji Superia 200; handheld:
