William Eggleston's Cameras

Chauncey Hare, in his catalog 'This Was Corporate America,' quotes John Szarkowski- 'In photography, it really helps to have money.'

Stieglitz, Evans, Eggleston... there's a long tradition, especially with MOMA, of art photographers being independently wealthy.

Collecting cameras is a very gentlemanly pursuit. One must find ways to fill the days, yes?

There's a documentary (its on YouTube split up into 10min segments) that shows more of his cameras, and he goes into his obsession of old ltm mount canons. They also show him messing around with a mamiya universal.

I just spent the afternoon ogling the lots of the Westlicht auction this weekend. It was more or less like Eggleston's suitcases turned over. :D

A link for the lazy.

These are just the Leicas and their clones. In various documentaries he's seen using other cameras, e.g. a Mamiya Universal, a Pentax MX with a pancake lens, a Contax G2 and so on. He's clearly insatiable :D

.

He probably knows that each of those cameras will be worth 10 times more, just because he owned them.
It is almost like printing your own money.

The usual thing about Cartier-Bresson. HCB did indeed come from money, but was most definitely not taking or getting. HCB bulk loaded odd movie lengths, sprockets only on one side. Lived in dismal surroundings for many years. Look up about Mexico. The fact some were wealthy has no bearing on their hard work, diligence and superb creative eyes. They may have benefited from a better education.
I look at photos, images and art, totally unconcerned with the artists bank account!
That's a lot of cameras..so i am not bad..i am healed!

"I don’t think about what camera I should use that much. I just pick up the one that looks nicest on the day."

-William Eggleston

I also saw in a documentary Egglestons daughter said there were always camera parts laying around the house, like he took them apart ect. You never know a big part of them may not even work right. Maybe he wasn't one to send out for a CLA.
Jay Leno owns about every car and motorcycle ever made. There's nothing wrong with collecting things. I have more cameras than I can use now. But I still like having them.
