I have taken on Media Relations duties for the First Annual APUG conference to held in Toronto, with Joe's blessing I am posting the press release as I know there are a lot of members of Rangefinder Forum who are analog photography fans.

Re: First Annual APUG Conference in Toronto Canada May 4-7, 2006

Film is not dead! On May 4th through 7th 2006 in Toronto Ontario Canada, the Analog Photography Users Group (apug.org) in partnership with J and C Photo will be holding a conference for amateur and professional photographers to celebrate and promote the use of film in the medium of photography. The APUG conference will be based at the Elevator Gallery (elevatordigital.ca) a multi use facility which is 15 minutes from Toronto’s downtown core.

The APUG conference will have 17 workshops including street photography, cross processing, lith printing, studio portraiture, solarization, introduction to large format photography, carbon printing and numerous portfolio reviews. The instructors who will be leading the workshops include Les McLean, Sandy King, Tim Rudman, Paula Chamlee, Michael A. Smith and many others. The workshops will be half day in length, further details and enrollment information on www.apug.org/conference. Other events open to all conference attendees include two round table discussions, demonstrations, lectures, photo tours of Toronto, Forks of the Credit Provincial Park and Gallery Tours.

The Analog Photography Users Group is a 9000 member (and growing), online community founded in September of 2002. Apug’s main tenet is to provide “an international community of like minded individuals devoted to traditional photographic processes.” Detailed information on all film formats and types, printing shooting, philosophy are just some of the topics covered by and for the professional and amateur photographer. The forum is subdivided into different areas of interest including developing and lab work, film and paper, camera equipment and collecting, philosophy of photography. APUG is based on open and subscription based membership with members worldwide. The site features English, French and Nederlandse (Dutch) speaking Forums, multiple online photo galleries, and a variety of off line member organized activities.

Elevator Gallery founded in 1999 by Bob Carnie and Kevin Viner is located on 42 Industrial Avenue, Toronto, Ontario M4G 1Y9 and is the base of operations for the APUG forum on May 4th to 7th, 2006. The facility features on site gallery, photo studio, traditional film (black & white and color) processing, black and white mini lab proof processing, color exhibition printing in RA4 and Cibachrome surfaces, black and white exhibition printing in fibre based materials, framing and digital print solutions for photographers and visual artists.

J and C Photo, based in Overland Park Kansas specializes in the sales of “old style” black and white formulations in all film formats. Including brands from Efke, Adox, Foma, Lucky, Kodak, J and C; to black and white photo papers, fibre based papers from cold to warm tone; and chemicals for developing. Founded in 2002 by John and Cherie Minakais in response to a lack of “old formula” black and white film on the market, J and C Photo conducts business over the Internet world-wide and will have a presence at the APUG conference.

Slightly off-topic, but is this related in any way to the "C and J Photo" retail store that used to be in Overland Park? I used to go there every time I was in Kansas City...

This is going to be one hell of a party. This is what we have going on:

Here is a synopsis of events and features:
• 17 Workshops,
• 5 Different Photo Outings run multiple times for a total of 11 outings
• 2 Contact Photography Festival Gallery Tours
• 2 Round Table discussions featuring photographers and photo industry leaders
• 2 Dinner Lectures
• ~3000 sqft demonstration and vendor area
• 3 Black and White labs (one dedicated to alt processes)
• 1 Colour lab (Ciba/Ilfo and RA4)
• 1 Studio
• Around the clock film processing for attendees
• An Apug Gallery Show
• Silent Auction
• Food Beverages and Music each night

Wellington Brewery is providing the beverages. Coming up to Toronto for the Contact Photography Festival which runs for the month of May is worth the trip in.

JandC Photo was founded by John and Cherie Manakais a few years ago to fill a need for old school back and white film emulsions. I am looking forward to meeting them, I plan to buy a lot of film that weekend🙂. JandC specialises in film, paper and developing materials and that is it.

This may not be of interest to anyone except me, but I see via a quick googlation that the National Ballet of Canada will be performing John Cranko's Romeo and Juliet during the same time period as the conference.

This suggests a hint for the organizers: Post a calendar of other events going on around Toronto during the conference weekend. This might make attendance an easier "sell," especially to people who need to be concerned about entertaining a spouse, offspring, significant other, etc., while they're indulging in analog photography overload...

Good idea. The new opera house may be open by then too, and perhaps the Blue Jays will be playing a home stand. Something for everyone ...

Now to my understanding the APUG conference will be semi nomadic because not everyone will be able to make it to Toronto. We do have the privilage of being an airline hub hence we are a 5 hour flight from the West Coast North America and Europe.
I volunteered because I want to see the conference to be a total success and I want it to reverbate around the industry and to gain experience in Public Relations promoting a hobby/passion that is near and dear to my heart.
