I am genuinely curious.
back in the day, it was obvious that some budget SLRs - my Prinzflex STTL - were manufactured in various versions for a year until substantially retooled .

Sony appears to have been doing something similar in that their final budget DSLR A290/A390 had a substantially retooled body over the original chassis with an outdated sensor etc of 2 years earlier then to be discontinued after one year.

I don't know if this was due to poor sales , or a decision to increase capacity for the new mirror less cameras and dispense with the entire DSLR genre .
Or was the decision to make a certain batch to cover a year approximately [ as they were remaindered for a while ] ?

If that were the case , why not save the expense of revised tooling and let the DSLR range gently fade away into oblivion ?

Like my Panasonic L1 , I am not complaining as the A2/390 suit me perfectly , but it does not seem very cost effective .

i just find it all a little curious .
