Worlds most expensive lens

Aside from the ZM 15mm the entire Zeiss consumer range is made in Japan by Cosina. Only cin lenses are made in Germany. All other formats are now defunct. I am glad something else keeps them busy.

Didn't a...maybe the same... Saudi prince have Zeiss whip up that 1700mm f/4 for medium format a few years ago?

There is a more expensive lens and it is due on the market in 2013:
Leica custom build 1600mm f5.6 — Hermes Limited Edition
$10,000,000.

😉

I heard that Leica does not have enough replacement parts to fix this lens once it breaks, but Leica will be offering some sort of trade up program for the upcoming 1600mm F/.95 Noctilux.

1. I'd genuinely like to see the MTF graphs for that lens.
2. It might be the most expensive lens for pictorial photography. Maybe. But I think we'd have to ask the folks at the US National Reconnaissance Office before really settling on that conclusion.
3. You can spend more by ordering a stepper with a lens from Zeiss.

i think the title should be changed to "The worlds most expensive consumer lens". I bet the cameras in the hubble or those in the mars rover cost more than 2million. Besides that, lets not leave out those custom hassleblads that were left on the moon 🙂

Having said that, 1600mm f5.6 and the 1700mm f4 is pretty impressive. It would need a hell' of a tripod to keep the lens steady... lol...

Mmmh, when one goes into scientific or military stuff price can get steep quickly, so I would't really bet on this toy being the most expensive one. I just wander what the use will be, I can't really see too much of a use for a superlong lens in a mount accepting no digital camera... Oh well, maybe the buyer will also purchase the Leica R-to-Nikon F conversion kit from EBay and then use it step down on his D4... 😀

A few years ago the Los Angeles Times ran a story about Panaflex buying Leica lenses for their motion picture cameras(film at the time) which ran over a million each.

Most expensive lens?

I guess that depends upon your definition of lens.

Is the Hubble Space Telescope a lens ?

The princes in Saudi don't really set the gas prices. It's the traders on Wall Street that do.

I know. Some people think that that some oil sheikhs gather around a camp fire and decide to raise oil prices.

Saudi Arabia has consistently pushed the buttons to keep oil prices artificially low over the years. Anyone trying to link oil prices to a basket of goods (imported) has been ignored.
