Shoot first, think later
The winner bailed on this auction. I'd had pre-auction communications with the seller who seems legit. I told him via direct email (after I failed to enter my bid in time to count) that if the sale fell through I might pay up to $1600 for the lot. Well, today I got a reply, seems the winner has wimped out and the kit may be available again.
I know, I know, it *can* be a scam but with all the references the buyer gave me, some of which I checked out, I have a good gut feeling about this.
So the question is - is the price right?, i.e. $1600 for an M6 (rated 9/10) and an Elmarit 28mm.
Thanks!
- Andy
P.S. If you think I am an idiot to be considering this, please just say so

Sounds about right to me - actually a bit of deal - as the M6's regularly go for 1100 - so you're getting the elmarit for 500 (as opposed to 8-1k)
I'm a bit bothered by the fact that the winning bid was less than you are offering... are you sure the seller isn't bilking the winner in order to get more out of you?

I wish I knew, although, from my email exchange with the seller before the auction ended, I got a pretty solid impression that the guy was not a crook.rogue_designer said:... Hi Andy, I think it's always risky going around the standard 'bay procedures, but if you end up with that package and don't need the 28, let me know!!

Typically if the high bidder backs out (which is frowned upon already) I've had things offered for the high bidders bid - not any amount over.
But I am always a bit wary. Still - if you got a good feeling from him, it's your gut that matters (it's your money afterall). It is a good deal.

#1 why should you pay more than the winning bidder?
#2 how do you know that the "winning bidder" wasn't just a shill whose job it was to drive the price up?
#3 SELLER HAS NO FEEDBACK - DO NOT WALK AWAY - RUN! First time seller with primo gear at a great price and a lame excuse? Not a good combo.
Look - this is a great camera that will last you a lifetime. Why put yourself at risk to save $300 bucks? Buy from a reputable dealer, get a warranty, don't look back.
Cautiously,

He may not be a crook but he could be plain greedy.
If so he is risking poor feedback from the guy who should have won it. If the buyer has wimped out, then you could have a good deal if it is as he describes. The main thing I would ensure is that you give yourself some kind of "protection" and pay by credit card through Paypal or similar.

I have never had a second chance offer on eBay that was anything but fraudulent. Stay away from this like poison! And most of them sound reasonable at first blush.

I also add my concerns that this sounds like a bad deal in terms of being risky.
I would back off this ebay offer and have a WTB add on RFF and PN instead. There always is a chance that someone will offer you a great deal ... with a warranty.

I don't feel sorry for people who take BIG chances to save a few bucks. Go legit....

I know... I should walk away... but I just had a long chat with the guy on the phone, he sounds legit... Can you tell I am tempted? I mean, the guy is from Nova Scotia for Pete's sake, even has real Canadian accent and all.. He sounded pretty put off with the original winner delaying of payment with sporadic, wishy-washy excuses. Anyway, I suggested that if it gets to that point (he is trying to get the winner another chance), I would buy the kit with a credit card, which gives me some protection. So, will see. Why, oh why are those damned Leicas so darn appealing? It almost like pretty women, I swear… And yes, I know I won't get any symphaty if I loose this gamble, my risk all the way...

Ask him if he will allow someone mutually acceptable here on RFF to be the escrow agent for you.

Yes, but it's not available for international mail. How convenient that your seller happens to be in Canada.
