It does look a bit painted. I would have expected Brass, but I am not an expert. If you ignore the black it does look like a nice P.

occasionally both Nikon and Canon would run out of the normal black paint body parts, but still have orders to fill.

sometimes you will find original black paint Canon and Nikon RF with chrome underneath. that's a hard combo to do. the local repairman usually can't paint over chrome.

I like the semi-matte-black epoxy finish of my Hexars so much that, if I somehow get the coins together to buy, and refurbish, a client's mint-looking-but-not-quite-functioning M4 body, I'm probably going to have it painted exactly the same way.

Of course, after doing this, and showing the results here, I'll likely have to petition the FBI to to be put under a version of their Witness Protection Program...

It is not clear to me that the black paint is over a chrome finish. The worn parts seem to show a finish that is duller than chrome. Chrome would probably be plated over a layer of nickel. Could the black paint cover up parts that were nickel plated but not chrome plated? I have seen a number of black paint Canon cameras for sale that seem to have this look at the worn spots.

I think it's a genuine black P, but for a user I would not buy it. The "damage" in the paint suggest quite heavy use. And for a collector that amount of damage is too much.

Well you guys know more than me about these - I know I wouldn't consider a Leica that looked like that being original. It even looks like the paint has flaked off rather than worn pff in the front.

But I did see a reference that states that the originals have a indentation for the white dot on the timer and this one has it. So it may be the real thing - and I guess a good deal after all.
