.72 Chrome TTLs are relatively rear these days. I ended up buying mine from Tamarkin in NYC after not finding one anywhere else. Good luck, it is a wonderful camera.

Tom the black lens is much lighter than the silver one... 240 grams to 335 grams. An even better lens, the current Elmar-M, is 170 grams in black.
I had two of the current Summicrons in silver and they are not light...

Thank you guys for the information. I just won an auction on ebay and I am getting a black Summicron 50mm. So now looking for a 0.72 body....
I actually like the body in black color however I am told that chrome ones last longer. Any suggestions?

The chrome bodies definitely take better pictures, Tom.
The chrome does wear better than black but just get what comes along - you're going to be using it right? Not simply looking at it...
If you are buying from a dealer you may be able to do better with price wise on a black body because they are more common. Let us know what you end up with.

the chrome does wear better, rub marks and paint wear are harder to see, but other than cosmetics, they won't last longer than the black version. As others have pointed out, the chrome is heavier than the black. Another good seller is Poon of www.hksupplies.com . good luck

Only WRT lenses because of the use of brass vs alloys. Chrome and black bodies weigh the same.Flyfisher Tom said:As others have pointed out, the chrome is heavier than the black.

My M5s need red dots!
Well... I had both, a chrome and a black, and kept the black 'cron. It felt lighter than the chrome.
As for durability... it's essentially the same. It just happens that things in dark colors show dirt and scratches more than other tones. The silver chrome finish hides these problems, but it's not immune to them.
Be aware, though, that the black bodies are better in terms of discretion. Somehow, silver chrome bodies seem to "scream" their presence; I have both kinds and can tell you from experience.
Would this be your first Leica kit? If so... think about adding a 35mm lens sometime soon. It's the natural lens for this camera, and will make you perceive the 50mm focal length as if it were a "long" lens.

thanks for sharing your experience. yes, this is my first leica. i picked 50mm since i already have a 35mm on my Contax T3 plus i found that i am too shy to get closer to my subjects (ppl on street) so i would give "longer" focal length a try :bang: :bang: why am i so shy!?

Not my experience @ all. I'm no more or less conspicuous whether I use a black or chrome camera (I personally prefer chrome). I think behavior, body language, clothing, etc. make a bigger difference.

Nor mine. I don't think it makes any difference - black, silver, red dot, fancy label - people tape over things and whatnot but the fact remains that RFs are old-fashioned little cameras that don't get attention. Part of their charm.
Solares you are not misled, the black Summicron is lighter 240 grams to 335 grams for the silver version.
Tom, its your first Leica cam and you are right to get what you want. I'm just lazy - essentially took what was on the counter...

Sorry for the confusion, Peter is correct about the bodies being the same weight ... I was referring to the weights of the lenses. My chrome lenses are much heavier than the black. On the other hand, the chrome lenses wear their barrel 'wear' much better.
