X-Pro 2 lens

Most of the Fuji lenses are very good. The 35 1.4 is magic. Great place to start if you like a 50mm FOV.

Prime time:

XF 18mm f2 lens (35mm format equivalent = 27mm)
XF 23mm f2 lens (35mm format equivalent = 35mm)
XF 35mm f2 lens (35mm format equivalent = 53mm)
XF 50mm f2 lens (35mm format equivalent = 76mm)

These are all I need for my X-Pro2

It depends on what you like. I also love the 35mm f 1.4 but then I'd also consider 23mm f 1.4 if you have to get on with just one and don't want it to be a zoom.

Consider though that the hybrid OVF is a wonderful feature of your camera. Something about looking through a real window inspires my shooting when I am out with that the camera. The 23 f 1.4 might challenge some people by it's size partially obscuring the view. The quality and rendering of that lens makes it worthwhile for me.

The 27mm f 2.8 is also a very nice lens and tiny so you don't know it's on the camera. The 18mm f2 is also very an unfairly maligned lens but it's a good one, also nice and compact. Unless I had other lenses in my bag, I would not go any wider.

I have the 16/1.4 and the Fujicrons.

If you are into shallow DOF portraiture, the 56/1.2 is magical.
 
Depends.

Personally I like the small f/2 lenses and I use the 23mm, 35mm and 50mm for most of my photos mainly due to their size and AF speed and accuracy. The 23mm and 35mm f/1.4 lenses both impart a special look to photos. The 27/2.8 is tiny and very sharp but it lacks a ring to control the aperture which makes it kind fiddly for me. The 60mm is an excellent lens for close ups or as a short telephoto but the AF is slow and finicky. While the 18mm f/2 is not super sharp to the edge of the frame, it's still quite good for candids and general photography. I'm very fond of the 14mm--it's sharp across the frame with superb abilities in rendering gray tones in B&W. I don't use the 14 much but I dearly love that lens.

I've also used a couple of zooms--the 18-55 and the 55-200. I'm not a zoom person but both these lenses are nice and sharp and convenient. Finally, the only non-Fuji lens I've used is the excellent Zeiss Touit 32mm. It performs extremely well from f/2 to f/4 where I like the look it imparts--I maybe like it a little better than the Fuji 35/1.4 but it's a toss up.

Those are my experiences.

Your "best" lens will be the one with a FOV that matches the FOV you now favor most. All the Fuji lenses have performance far in excess of our abilities as photographers. I assure you that none of them will hold you back and none will produce better photos than you are a photographer.

I could tell you that I am now using only two Fuji lenses but which ones work for me have no relationship to what would work for you.

FWIW: the two lenses I am using now do not score very high in popularity among others.
 
I only have the one lens atm, the 18-55mm f2.8-4 . It produces lovely pics so I’m in no hurry to get more lenses. It is wide enough for most of my needs and I’m not inclined to go longer because I prefer the OVF and it becomes impractical at longer focal lengths. If I need a longer lens I go to my d500
 
From my time with Fuji, the magic came from the 16 & 35 F1.4s. Didn't own it, but I understand the 56 F1.2 came into that class too.

Yep...the closest camera experience to those of us who like film RF shaped bodies and size.

That said, it seems magic is always applied to lenses wide open and with nice bokeh. This is fashionable right now... but many magical photos from our history have been made using non magical equipment.

What's it like to use a zoom lens in the X-Pro1? Do you see the image zooming through the VF? Is there a way to estimate the area covered? Does the zoom flow through the range or has stops?

I'm asking because I'd like to add a 18-55 to my lens inventory. I got the X-Pro1 in December 2016, and would like to use it more. Right now, I only have the 23mm f1.4 (which, I admit, is really good), but a zoom is very tempting.

it depends on your need. my boss loves his X-Pro2 with 23mm f/2.

i personally loved the 18mm f/2 as a documentary lens although not sharp for landscape.
50mm f/2 is a nice light and sharp portrait lens too if you want something smaller and cheaper than the 56mm f/1.2.
for some reason i never bonded with either 35mm lenses (1.4 or 2)
 
I simply like the 24-70 I have with my Nikon AF system. The 18-55 is roughly the same range (27-84, I believe), and even though the aperture varies, it's just from f2.8 to f4.

Google helped with my question. Apparently, the viewfinder window increases or decreases in size as you zoom in or out. I'm planning on getting myself this lens for Xmas. Let's see how things work out, because, to be quite honest, when it comes to digital, I only like Nikon.
 
The kit lens is really good, but I haven't used it on the X Pro 1. It's worth a try considering you know your camera with the the 23 f 1.4 obscuring a bit of the OVF. As I recall the 18-55 does similarly if you don't use that hood! If on the other hand you are hoping to use the EVF with it, as I recall the refresh rate improved a lot on subsequent models. They're easy to resell if you find one at a decent price.
