So I've been interested in the Fuji X cams for a while now. I'd like to pick one up but I have virtually no experience with the cameras and I've never seen them side by side.

I have tried to make a list of the differences to try to determine which one is the ticket, so far here's what I've gathered:

Build: X Pro1 is more solid, but is larger and weighs more.

LCD: X Pro1 has higher resolution, but I haven't herd anyone complain about the X-E1's screen.

Playback Button Location: Almost isn't worth mentioning but I guess the X Pro1 placement is better, since it's accessed by your shooting hand.

Flash: X-E1's has a built-in, but I almost never use flash.

Hybrid (OVF & EVF) vs. EVF:

X Pro1: OVF allows photographer to see outside of frame lines.
OVF conserves battery (1000 shots per charge).
EVF can be used at an instant.

X-E1: EVF is higher resolution.
More efficient (350 vs. 300 shots per battery using EVF).
Has diopter<which fortunately doesn't affect me.

I'm trying to ignore the price difference (since I'd rather end up spending more than getting the "wrong camera").

What is your opinion?

I've never held the XE-1.

The differencein size seems unimportant. I enjoy using the optical finder. I don't pan much, so th I prove EVF isn't compelling. A + diopter works perfectly or my shooting eye with both displays.

Before the X100S was announced I was going to sell my X100 and pick up the XE-1 as a second body. Now I think I'll just wait for the next generation hybrid finder body.

Xpro's OVF did it for me. I had the X-e1 and was just going to wait until the Xpro2. Well, during many very sunny outdoor shoots I was struggling to see the EVF. Exchanged for the Xpro and am glad I did. Plus, the EVF on the Xpro is still very usable, I don't really notice much difference between the two EVFs.

I like the ex 1 dioper and the evf works fine in the brightest sunshine ive had. To me it looks so good its like a ovf. All things considered i choose ex1 because for 1290 i got camera and 35 lens. Based on looks along pro looks best. I use the flash as well.

Joe should be the authority here, with one in each hand.

I know only the XE1. The diopter is crucial for me, I need -3 to shoot without glasses. If your eyes are good/young, you may have years before dioptrics (or contacts, or lasik) are a factor. The XE1 erg-factor is closer to what I like on a wrist strap (e.g., GXR/M, OM4, Pen FT). If you prefer OVF capability the choice is easy, and the XP is more M-sized if that's an erg/feel preference. I liked saving $$/size and getting the 35 1.4 as my kit choice.

There's just times when the OVF comes in handy. I also like the M9 size of the X-Pro1... and it looks cooler. ;)

they are so close in what they do but the feel is so very different because of the smaller body of the x-e1...and then there is the ovf...
i like them both and use them about equally...i love the feel of the x-e1...i have smaller hands and it fits into them so comfortably...the x-p1 is not nearly as comfortable but it is not uncomfortable to use at all. i rarely use the ovf anymore...i like the evf and even the rear lcd at times...if i had to sell one it might end up being a coin toss.

I didn't like the size of the XPro-1. For me, the XE-1 is perfect. It is the most Leica-like handling of any camera I have tried outside of the M system. I never understand the problems people have with EVFs. I don't mind them at all.

I'm going to my local camera shop today to check out both of these side by side. I like the X100, but something about spending $1000 for a fixed-lens camera doesn't appeal to me (just a personal thing). I tried the X-Pro1 and thought it was nice and I liked the size, but I was actually a little disappointed in the build quality, and I couldn't get the hang of the viewfinder(s). But in fairness to both, holding demo models in a store for a few minutes is a poor way to judge a camera.

The X-E1 looks like it might fall somewhere in between the two, and I am curious to check it out. In general, I dislike digital cameras and am partial to my Leicas, but I admit that the convenience, and sometimes performance, of digital is too much to ignore. I want an affordable digital where I could still use my M and LTM glass, and I am hoping one of these Fujis may fit the bill.

I like the ex 1 dioper and the evf works fine in the brightest sunshine ive had. To me it looks so good its like a ovf. All things considered i choose ex1 because for 1290 i got camera and 35 lens. Based on looks along pro looks best. I use the flash as well.

It is a very good EVF for sure. I have had problems on a desert shoot, and a rooftop shoot where model was in shade and I was in the sun. Its became very difficult to see the EVF. It's like the little screen went dim and I had to shield my face with my hand. I actually called my camera shop right then and asked if I could switch. I much prefer the OVF. It was somewhat like shooting with my M6 again. I often just turn the preview off and shoot away. Plus, the EVF is still there for macro, or for very precise framing. And ++ the LCD on the back is a league above the XE1's.

I've had both and I prefer the X-E1. Its size is perfect for me.

With the X-Pro1 I found myself using the EVF most of the time anyway, and the X-E1 has a better EVF.

Not my photo, but you can see how it compares to M6. X-E1 felt too small in my big mitts. The grip on the XE-1 was a must for me.

Aye, exactly the reason I went with the X-Pro1 over the X-E1. Well that and the OVF.

Could have saved a bundle if the X-E1 had suited my hands but buying it would have been a mistake for me personally. Having said that I may buy one later down the line for a 2nd body.

Only way of finding out is trying both at a dealers because YMMV, so glad I tried both before I bought.

i shot the xe-1 for a fashion week job here today and i agree that the body is not the most comfortable to handle. also af and viewfinder delay / freeze / "blackout" aren't very impressive... the x100 was the better camera today (and the m2 was the best.)

As to the eyepiece diopter correction, I have a +3 in my X-Pro1. This is not within the range of adjustment of the X-E1 or the X100 series. For some reason most manufacturers (except Panasonic) stint on the + side. Maybe there's some optical/mechanical reason for this.

Nobody?

The new firmware could have an impact. Focus peaking might be more useful with the XE-1 as the EVF display is better. Otherwise, I don't see how the new firmware benefits one camera more than the other.

It really depends on how much an OVF will impact your work.

There is a size difference as well, but it's small.

As I write this, on Amazon US the price difference is $400, which is not trivial. I fond the OVF useful (and I really don't care about the price) so if my XP1 disappeared I would just order a new body. If Fuji's next generation of bodies do not have OVF's, I'll buy another XP1 for a back up body.
