I have a couple of GSN's on their way and have been preparing for arrival by reading up on it in this forum. First, let me say this forum is a very informative resource. I have recently been searching the threads on info for purchasing a lens hood and was unable to find a source for purchasing one. That said, I did locate what I believe to be an adequate hood and have purchased it. The link below is to this individual's Ebay Store and I provide it here to hopefully aid another in pursuit of this accessory. This person has different sizes and you will have to browse to find the 55mm normal/standard size. It comes with a "safety" filter and lens hood cap.

I have no vested interest in the well being of this particular seller.

Thanks to all for freely sharing information on this forum. For a newbie to the world of photography and specifically rangefinders, this group has aided me greatly.

Your cameras may or may not come with rubber hoods which, when they are in good shape, are attractive and seem to do the job. They suffer the same fate as other rubber hoods though in that after years of folding back and forth, they split and are worthless.

Might be best to look elsewhere....

Received this particular hood in the mail today. It "steps" out maybe 1/4" beyond the lens diameter on each side.....more than I had hoped for......hard to tell from the picture that accompanied the auction. It winds up clipping the bottom right corner of the rangefinder view slightly. It is a metal hood. I'll try to attach a thumbnail.

There is one - hard to find

There is one - hard to find

Yashica did make one for the GSN - I have one. Got it off eBay a few months ago. It's about 58mm inside diameter, and has a clamp screw to secure it to the lens. If you have a real Yashica filter, it fits that too.
Any lens hood does show in the viewfinder, but this one is a minimum. Sorry I don't have a photo to attach.
I always use a hood for two reasons. 1. To reduce the posibility of lens flare, and 2.To help protect the lens from bumps and knocks.

Works for me.

Try and find an original Yashica hood if you can.

I found an original for my Yashica GSN after an 18 month intensive search - I came across it in a camera store discount bin for .50c (Australian)!

Up until finding it I tried all the non OEM hoods I could find only to discover that all suffered from one or two common faults. They either intruded on the viewfinder or, in the case of the clamp-on type, did not fit securely.

Enjoy the thrill of the chase!

Regards
Peter

Lens Shade...

Lens Shade...

This is what the Yashica metal lens shade looks like. It has the locking screw clamp and exhibits minimal corner intrusion in the viewfinder window. They are available on eBay from time to time. Search "shade". I aquired two under "shade" listings.

Good luck,

Vivitar Hood

Vivitar Hood

I've found an excellent hood for my GSN from ebay, the Vivitar 55mm lens hood.

Vivitars hood-dimensions are by far the exact same ones like in the picture George Bonanno posted as far as I can say by comparing measurements in pictures.

You can find pictures and the ebay listing for the hood here: http://www.usl.fi/g/d_pBK
