Sunday I was browsing another forum (apug.org) and ran across a thread on the Yashica Electro 35. I had bought a new one of these in 1970 during my tour in Viet Nam. At the time I was not really sure why I bought it other than I liked the looks of the camera. It was a black body model and came with a cool little table top tripod which was quite sturdy. I don't recall why I sold it to another photographer but I do recall liking the looks of the photos produced with it. ( I bought and sold a number of cameras back then that I now wish I had kept).
Sigh...
30 plus years later. A friend who knew I had owned one of these cameras had a chrome model sitting around and gave it to me a little over a year ago. It sat around for a month or two without my ever using it and I gave it to a young man at work who had expressed an interest in photography. I got him one of the battery adaptors as the mercury batteries are either not made at all or very hard to find. To my knowledge the young man has never shot and developed a single roll of film with it.
As I was reading the thread I remembered how much I liked the camera and sighed inwardly as I recalled that I had been given one recently and soon gave it away.
The last post in the thread was from a gentleman who apparently buys and refurbishes this particular camera and sells them on ebay. He replaces the "pad of death" as he called it ( a little rubber pad that must be present and in good shape for the shutter to fire from what was said) and he puts in new light seals.
I pm'd him and asked him if he would notify me the next time he had one ready for sale .
The upshot of the whole deal is that I now have another chrome body GS model winging my way.
And I won't give this one away. 🙄
