I had high hopes for this one.

Test Target Corrected by br1078phot, on Flickr
Exposure adjustment to bring out the sky, and removed Date Stamp.

At 38mm by br1078phot, on Flickr
Full frame, no corrections.

Fair Weather by br1078phot, on Flickr
Cropped to remove bottom clutter, and Date Stamp.

At 165mm by br1078phot, on Flickr
Camera shake kind of ruins this one.

Bumblebee In Pink by br1078phot, on Flickr
Couldn’t get the macro mode to work, so I just backed up, and zoomed in maximum.

Green Ridge Recreation Center by br1078phot, on Flickr
No corrections on this one.

Fishing Fish by br1078phot, on Flickr
Corrected exposure, and added contrast to bring out the underwater image.

In It Up To It’s Knees by br1078phot, on Flickr
Max zoom, rotated, cropped, exposure corrected. Lack of resolution really kills this one.

Two things occur to me looking at these images..
The deer in the river photo doesn't seem to suffer from lack of resolution, but instead it appears that the AF went for the fence instead. At 165mm DOF is quite shallow, so anything beyond the fence will not be properly resolved. With the lens focused at infinity, the shot would have been far better.
The other thing is that an unstabilized 165mm is awfully long without some form of support, especially given that the aperture at 165mm will be f13, causing very slow shutter speeds. 165mm screams tripod and self timer release to me.
Doesn't mean that all of a sudden it would be everyone's dream camera, but I'd think you can pull more IQ out of it when handled with some extra care.. Why not give it a second try?

I think what the main problem is, Peter, one must put it in Spot Focus mode to get long shots. This involves shutting the camera off, changing the setting, then turning the camera back on. Much too time consuming when shooting wildlife. And I was really cradling the lens when taking the shot. Just zooming the lens spooked the deer even from that distance, so I took the shot anyway. With more practice, I probably could get better photos with it, but it's not high on the priority list for now.
