Has anybody ever used a Yashikor wide-angle attachment on their Electro 35 rangefinder? I'm wondering to what effective focal length it converts the lens into.

It depends on Electro, I think. G series, GX and MG-1 had their own wide and tele converters. On G series Yashikor wide converter has 0.8x factor, resulting in 36mm FL.

Only 0.8x, gee whiz, that's hardly wide-angle!

yeah, that's certainly not very wide, and easiness of use....I have avoided aux attachments, though yesterday I took couple of shots with 35mm lens and there's difference from 45mm - especially after long period with 45mm.
Just P&S or SLR make whole business a lot easier this days.

Auxiliary attachments will also degrade the image quality, because the intended design of the lens does not accomodate attachments like teleconverters or "wideners."
I think if I could re-write history, I would make 35mm lenses the "normal" lens for 24x36 format (even though 50mm lenses are close to the diagonal measurement of 24x36mm).

as for "normal", anyone has it's own measure. Pentax believed in 42mm and made "normal" limited lens in this FL. Actually when I have to go with one camera, 40mm is good "in-between" from 35mm and 45mm. So I believe in small 40mm lens....or small 25-50 zoom, if I feel 40mm will be too restricting.
Back to attachments - some people demonstrate good pictures with them - quality is also relative term. I think they worked in past when you had to shell out lot of money for gear (to go wider or more tele with SLR), but this days it's just curiosity which gives use to this attachments.
