I received a nice Collapsible Summicron in the mail today from Kim Coxon (thanks, Kim!). What a piece of workmanship! They certainly don't build lenses like this anymore.
I have two 39mm thread-in hoods around the house - a Heavystar and a Redleica1. The lens has the typical coating wear, so I thought it best to get a hood on it.
I screwed the Heavystar first. I decided it was visually much too large, so I started unscrewing it not paying too much attention to what I was doing. Next thing I know I'm holding the hood with the entire optic package forward of the diaphragm!!!
Yikes! It went right back on, but it's wasn't a pleasant thing to have happen to a lens within six hours of arrival. Boy, those aperture blades looked delicate - luckily I didn't sneeze.
I think I'll look for a clip-on hood instead!

oops! I did that with a customers lens once by accident. He asked me to remove a broken filter and I ended up with a lens in two pieces and a filter still attached. A $15 lens repair for us turned into a loss of $75 when we had to have it repaired for him!
D'oh!
Last time I tried that with out just cutting the damn thing off!

My M5s need red dots!
I was afraid of that happening to me when I put a yellow Vivitar filter on my Konica Hexar lens... and then I screwed on the dedicated hood (it's NOT a bayonet or clip-on). First, the hood got stuck on the filter, then I managed to get the filter off and had to struggle to separate filter and hood. The front element didn't seem wobbly, but I was very, very scared, so I didn't quite apply that much "torque" on my turns.
Later, when I finally managed to disassociate all the stuff, I noticed I had cuts in my hands: the edge of the filter made shallow slashings on my skin.
I don't have that filter any longer. And I went and purchased a B&W yellow filter for my lens instead. Never had a problem again!
I'm sure your 'cron survived, Ken... but that was a scare! Just one thing: that lens is very noticeable with a hood, no matter what you do, but it does help anyway.
If I run into either an IROOA or a 12585 I'll let you know!

Thanks, Francisco - I haven't been seeing any aftermarket clip-on hoods in 39mm, so I expect I'll end up with a "proper" Leica hood.
I'm going to use the redleica1 one for the time being, but I have to say a screw-on hood rather defeats the purpose of a collapsible lens!
