I wonder if this was talked about before - how do Zeiss lenses compare from different mounts? I mean ZM to ZM to G1/G2? Any users of all those systems with comments on this?
Krosya, I can only comment on the comparison between the ZM and ZF line, and for obvious design limitations the ZM line wins, especially for a more even performance in the corners,( at least up to 50mm), although the Makro Planar 50/2 ZF and Planar 50/2 ZM are remarkably close in performance.
Despite similar designs, I found the 45/2 Planar sharper than the ZM 50 Planar or 50 Summicron. I suspect the same is true for the 28 and possibly the 21. I also found that the 90/2.8 Sonnar was as sharp or sharper than the 90/2.8 Elmarit-M. Overall, I think build quality was slightly better from Kyocera than CV.
The basic optics design is practically the same for the different classical Carl Zeiss lenses. Regardless they are intended for Contax, Hasselblad or Leica M-cameras. Carl Zeiss makes a point of that the latest ZM lenses have 'the latest' of internal reflex reduction techneques. This will result in a 'slight' - very slight, increase in contrast. - It is indeed the combination of high resolution and high contrast that characterize the Carl Zeiss lenses.
I have the Carl Zeiss classical 90 degrees wide angle Biogon in two versions; a late model of Hasselblad 905SWC (Medium format- 38 mm) - and ZM 25 mm . - I can't see any real difference in performance, - with the exception of the difference in format.
I use a range of Post 60's mounts using zeiss optics - Rollei 6000 series, Rollei QMB and M42, Icon Icarex /voigtlander, and New Zeiss Icon ZM and Rollei 35s and have in the past used Yashica/contax - for me zeiis/schott glass is the best that there is for the photos i take -this is different from saying the best lenses as my personal favourite lenses construction and feel wise are mid 1980's pentax Km and Ka. Zeiss glass and zeiss lens designs tend to give fairly repeatable characteristics - contrast especially in biogons and sonnar - it brings out the best in fuji velvia and so far the ZMs have lived up to expectation and then again though I also cant wait for the first zeiss glass specifically for the Rollei/sinar Hy6 it will be hard to not be able to justify paying out lots of euros for a hybrid
