I apologize if this question was asked before.
How do you frame 40mm on the ZI? Let's say I manage to cause the 40mm lens raise the 35mm framelines. How bigger are they then 40mm?
Rumor says that on Leicas 35mm framlines actually frame 40mm.
Anybody with experience with it?

I'm using a 40mm Sonnar with an LTM=>M adapter that brings up the 35mm lines.

I tend to give it a big of margin, just in case. Again, most of us won't remember the exact framing of a particular shot, unless you make a mental note of it or make a sketch.

It's something that you'll want to test yourself. Shoot a couple of rolls so that you can get a feel for how much room you need to give the framelines vs. the actual photo.

Simple math will tell you that a loose (85%) coverage of a 35mm frame is a tight 40mm frame (35mm x 1.15).

A simple way to confirm is to place a piece of matte film at the film gate (or use a Nikon focusing screen), set the aperture wide open and shutter at B and observe, using objects such as building edges as hard reference. Double check by setting the aperture at the smallest opening also.

I use a CV Nokton 40mm f1.4 as my only lens and the framing is very precise using the 35mm frame line.

Thanks to TomA's kind advise, I managed to file down the bayonet claw in about 5 minute to bring up the 35mm frame line in my ZM.🙂 TomA also suggested using the inside edge of the 35mm frame line just to be safe.

The M6 35mm framelines roughly cover 40mm from 3m onwards (with older Leicas the 35mm framelines are larger). The Bessa and ZI 35mm framelines are even tighter, so it should work well with a true 40mm (like the Rokkor or Summicron). As said above, 1.2m onwards sounds about right.

The 40mm Nokton is slightly longer (43mm), so the fit is not as good.

And then again, if you do slides, you got to give the slide frames some more room.

Best,

Roland.
