Can't find a thread for this lens so let start one now. I'm aware of the awesome 21 SA photos thread. Let show what you can do with this "modern" lens. I'm starting to get the 21mm focal length i think!

the zm 21/2.8 is underrated and misunderstood. it is not a landscape lens like the distagon but it's capable of some really nice results. I hope Semilog will summarily come along and post some of his work from before he went all digital.

What characteristic makes it a non-landscape lens?

Compared to the distagon it's got lower sharpness and more distortion, which is considered flaws in traditional landscape photography. Traditional landscape would also be done on a tripod, hence there's no need for a greater aperture.

the distagon has a flatter field and higher contrast at high frequencies in the outer 2/3rds of the frame. the sort of thing that's desirable should you wish to have an entire frame in sharp focus to the corners, basically.

the ZM 21/2.8 has sharpness falloff but really, really high performance in the center. the sort of thing that would probably do well if you focused on one point in the center ;)

dont get me wrong I think both of these lenses are great, but they serve different purposes.

i used one for a couple of days on my M8, but much preferred the Elmarit 21mm pre-ASPH in the end for its great character and better mechanics. but still the Zeiss is pretty decent for the price.

it's interesting to hear the Biogon is not a good landscape lense.

I don't think that's what is being suggested.

The biogon is a good landscape lens. Certainly better than most 21mm lenses and certainly the zooms which cover this range. Better even than the G21 at this since Zeiss tinkered with the formula a bit.

But, the Distagon is a great landscape lens. In fact, other than the 21 Super Elmar ASPH, it is really THE 21mm lens when you have an image where the entire frame is in the plane of best focus. BTW it doesnt actually lose to the Elmar, either.
