Zorki 4 question

I have always had a love hate relationship with FSU's. After reading a recent thread where one of the members raved about a particular FSU dealer (not Fedka), I decided to take the plunge (again!!). The member was right in that the camera and lens (I61) were clearly refurbished and cosmeticly the camera is stunning.

My question has to do with the knob that disengages the advance to rewind. I never had a Zorki 4 so I don't know how this operation is supposed to feel but turning the knob to left towards the pie sign requires more than one turn. Getting back to the advance selection also seems very sloppy and eventually seems to work.

Any tips or do I have a problem here.

BTW I do make sure the shutter has been fired before I start the operation.

To disengage the mechanism for rewind, press and turn clockwise on the shutter-button collar. On mine, that takes about 160-170 degrees and, obviously, the same to go back. From memory of how the mechanics works, it really should not be possible to do a full 360 turn so I think you have a problem there.

EDIT: I've just looked on my "parts" body. There's a helical cut with a guide screw in it. If the screw is not missing then you could not turn it more than I said above.

I just checked my Zorkii 4 and the 160-170 degree counter clockwise is sufficient put it into rewind mode. When setting mine back I found that I had to wiggle the ring slightly until I felt it snap into advance mode. After putting the camera back into advance mode, the first time I turn the advance knob it seems to "free wheel" about half a turn before it starts to cock the shutter. All of my Zorkiis work this way.

The ultimate test of one of these cameras, of course, is to run a roll of film through it.

Hi Peter, I found after fooling with it for an hour that getting it to rewind works as you described. Getting back to advance does seem a little odd but I was able to get it to work doing what you described. I have no problem dealing with this I just wanted to know if it was broken. Since the camera is such a beauty I would very much like to keep it.

I no longer have a Z-4 but mine was a little sloppy that way, too, and tended to get stuck in the disengaged position. I learned to keep a cable release handy, which would always bring it right back.

Mine would get stuck in the disengaged position also. I disassembled the shutter release and collar (if I remember correctly, there is a two part shaft and a spring in there). Everything was covered in thick dried out grease. After cleaning and light reapplication of grease, I have not had any problems with it.
