Zorki 4, speed dial and other issue.

Ok, any advice on this one most welcome. I have a Zorki 4, the black bodywork is somewhat less than black in places, cleaning made no difference so I assume it is paint loss, anyone have a recomended paint or method for returning it to black. The other issue is the speed dial is out, in as much as it does not match up with the speed selected, for example 500 might read 100, is this a quick fix or a major problem? Thanks in advance.

Hi..well I would move the shutter speed dial around till it produced , say B, the curtain stays open. Then loosen the small screw(s) holding the shutter speed dial in place, and move the dial till B matches the indicator mark Iif its a later model Z4 it could be hard to find). Then tighten the screw(s). For the black paint, I would try (if it is the top and bottom trip, a small can of "Humbrol" matte black paint found at hobby shops (there is one at Stafford) and apply that with a small brush. Not sure about paint loss--I just live with it on my cameras.
For the speed dial, where the marks line up (or not) depends on whether the camera is cocked or not. When you wind on, the speed dial rotates to, hopefully, the set speed. After you've pressed the shutter button, the speed dial rotates as the shutter fires and will end up not aligned with the speed. This is partly why you should only change speeds when the shutter is cocked.

Thanks for the replies. The dial is out after the shutter is cocked but before fired. I know that after firing it will end up in a seemingly random position. I think I may have to remove the wind knob and have a go at setting it the right place. Anyone know of a supplier of mini screwdrivers in Aus or via internet?

You don't need to remove the wind knob.

Get a mini-screwdriver set in a good hardware store. The smallest blade should do - your target are those two set screws in the speed selector wheel.

To adjust, first wind. Then move up the speed selector as to set shutter speeds, and turn clockwise as far as it will go. Set it down. This is the 1/30 position.

Now, loosen both set screws of the speed selector (about 1/2 turn each should do, no more than one turn each). Turn the loose selector until the mark is in the 1/30 position. Tighten set screws. Verify correct speeds.
