This 4K works fine with the exception of frame spacing being narrow between all frames. They don't touch but are so close to each other that cutting is a bit of a pain. Any ideas where to start looking? (It would also be nice if the spacing did't fall on perforations but, let's not ask for too much!)

I experienced a similar problem with my Kiev 4.
With regard to spacing on perforations, you may need to trim the felt on the film cartridge: if it is too much, the cartridge does not fit perfectly its place inside the camera. The film advance is ruled by the sprocket wheel inside the camera , and not by the winding reel: this reel (where the film, once exposed, is wound up) should slip a little bit to compensate the growing diameter of the film roll while winding up.
I hope you can understand my explanation: it is easier to check it, than to explain.
Enjoy your Zorki, a great camera indeed!
