Zeiss 50mm f2 Planar - Pictures and comments

Nachkebia: "ZM 35/2 does not come closer to ZM 50/2, it is totally different animal, texture and tonality and overall feeling wise..."

x-ray: "You'll find the 35 Biogon to be very much like the Planar."

So, which is it?

hehe....I was looking at the shots that I took with the biogon and the planar and it seems that the biogon is "smoother" in a way that it doesnt have the nail bitting absolute sharpness of the planar images but for the most part its more then enough for everyone. 35mm lens is a long ways off for me, probably take me another two years to save up that kind of money.

Very nice shots. Love the sharpness and the Zeiss look.

I like to think of that as a discrete tab, by the way.

yeah, its get the job done, im sure once my lens loosens up a bit it will be more useful

wonderful photos and thread! It'll be nice to hear comments from you when you get a summicron. Myself I'm considering get a Biogon at 25mm anyway :) I'm too much leica freak to consider any longer lenght from Zeiss but I'll get a very old Sonnar for sure and learn more about Zeiss characterics. Those renditions of your shoots impressed me. what a zeiss, I could confuse this with leica if it is not rendition. it seems that things pops out from planar compared with my summicron, at other words, more dimensionality. I dont know really if im seing right here in web, lol

you know I was just looking back on the photos taken with my old Leitz Elmar, and looking at the Zeiss Planar shots, and I have to say...the Elmar's images are really good, I mean really really good, but they really do lack any sort of depth. Some of the images I didnt show (maybe I should stick up for the heck of it) really show that 3D quality that is lacking from everything else I have....

The Planar cured me of Leica GAS. I sold my 50mm Summicron after having seen what that Planar could do. But, of course, feel free to toy around with that lesser 50mm of yours... ;) :D

he was probably talking about the 35 summicron I have been thinking about, but I thought he meant I was going to get a 50 summicron too! Hm....naw...the planar is pretty nice, and now what I really want to do with it is load some FP4 and do some portraits!

Avotius, those pics are really great - I highly enjoyed looking though them. The area you live in is quite beautiful!

I love the look of that planar as well - really is a fantastic lens. Feel free to review other lenses too, I enjoy your take on things.

Dammit! I was afraid something like this would happen. I have a 25 Biogon and a Rollei 40 Sonnar. I kind of wanted to look into the 50 Planar, but figured that I'm getting a lot of good use out of the two that I have. Now I see these pictures and I REALLY want the 50 Planar. Can't afford it though, so I'm just going to have to sit here and mope!

avotius, it is not fair to compare a old elmar with new planar :) because older lenses lack high contrast as newer lenses have. I look forward to your portrait shoots and see how planar render faces :)

wordpress, hehe. One reason is that I need f1.4 at 35mm, 50mm and 75mm which at the moment zeiss dont have ;) You know that is easy to produce excellent f2 and f2.8 lenses as Zeiss did but f1.4 might be difficult challenge to produce at least as good as leica's but at lower price! Competition is good for us, consumers anyway :)

Tomasis: Of course its not fair, but the elmar was the only other 50mm rf lens I had on hand so there ya go. The elmar is a pretty good lens though, just a little fumbly for my tastes.

Rhoyle: Gas sucks doesnt it?

fdigital: thanks, its a great place to be, a lot to see and so full of life.

Today I took the planar and my 35 skopar p2 out to a new place to take some shots, took two rolls of xp2 and a roll of delta 100. In a few days I should have some bw shots to show here of my typical street photography variety. Overall the lens really handles well, the nipple works as a great little tab for me without getting in the way of barrel focusing when the mood strikes. One time the situation called for me to switch to my 35mm lens and then I realized just how small that lens is compared to the mighty planar. Both are great and compliment each other well. The hood that gets into your viewfinder frames didnt bother me once all day, didnt notice it at all, so if you are worried about that when purchasing this lens....dont, it probably wont mater.

Hi

I just got a hood (used - but no wear at all) for my 50mm Planar ZM - it's fairly hard to mount. I worry that something in the lens may loosen up... Any comments on this?

Best regards

hmm, my zm hood for the 50/2 mounts/unmounts quite easily. is yours some other type? i see no way the standard zm 35/50 hood would be able to loosen up anything inside the zm 50/2 lens.

No, it's the original 35/50 ZM hood.

I thought because of the amount of torque one transfers to the lens barrel when mounting the hood...

Beautiful images! The flags at the supermarket is a winner to my eye.

Yet another ZM lens with those great Zeiss colors. The blue in the bus, the red of the taxi- yum!

You know I was wondering about this a little when I got it before I realized that the hood is of a different design then the vogitlander lenses, my skopar's hood needs a lot of torque to get it on right, far more then the zeiss's if you push the hood in while turning. My skopar has indeed become a little loose where the hood mounts and also the inner lens barrel, but so far it hasnt harmed anything.

Thanks, I am pleased to see the familiar zeiss colors in those images too. The bw images are a little different then my work I did with a 80mm planar lens on a hasselblad....they are more..............classic looking, less contrasty in the high lights which means it tends to hold details better in bright spots but at the same time is missing that familiar brightness from the hassy lens. But then again I was also shooting Lucky 100 with the hassy and XP2 with the new ZM lens, so there might be something in that too. Expect some examples soon!

As promised, some BW photos taken with the 50mm Planar lens. All shot on on Ilford Xp2 and scanned on a Fuji S2000 scanning station.

This old guy was out for a stroll with the little one in his arms when I wandered by. He asked me where I was from, of which I replied "America" then he gave the standard reply of "ahh...America is a great place". Then he gave a big smile while I took this photo, then the kid started crying...

These old well textured walls can be found all over the more run down neighborhoods here, new buildings are all covered in the same variety of boring beige and white tile with the occasional ugly orange stripe going right down the side. I prefer the bricks myself.

Taking a snooze on a hot August day sounds nice to me. The temperature was hovering around 40 C and this shady spot next to a wall proved to be a nice place to get out of the sun. I wonder if anyone ever came by and snatched one of her walnuts when no one was looking.

The back streets are usually the most interesting places to wander around here in Chongqing. The narrow alleys are crammed with stuff for sale and wandering through them can be pretty fun if you know how to bargain.

One of the common things you see all around Chongqing are these porters who carry stuff from here to there. Most of them are people from the country side who have come into the cities to make money. The funny thing is that they all have mobile phones and sit around in shady spots when not carrying stuff playing cards and gambling away their earnings.

This kid just emerged from an alley way restaurant shop. By the looks of it not the cleanest place but as a rule it will probably taste better then the clean places! Most street side shops you can to walk through to get wherever your going, its kind of like a maze actually.

This guy sits there around the same area just about everyday. His body is completely covered in scar tissue, probably from being severally burned. Its a gruesome sight which is partially why I took this photo from afar. The other reason was because you can see how many people pass by this guy at any given time during the day, most will act as if he isn't there, others will react in disgust. He got whatever coins I had on me for the shot.

1159262213_e993f1703c_o.jpg

This was bizarre to say to least. Right in a busy foot traffic area some people lying on the ground next to a keyboard and amplifier, probably taking a break from playing music to passers. This was taken right in the middle of one of Chongqing's major city centers where all sorts of people can be seen.

People like this kind of get on my nerves, the fact that there are people all over Chongqing like this doesn't help either. This guy wants to get on the bus. This particular bus you get on at the front door and stick your fare into the money slot. This guy is in such a hurry to get on the bus (probably because he is afraid one of those people behind him will take the seats before him) that he tried to pull the door open. The driver finally opened the back door but not before this fine fellow jammed the thing by forcing it. And I used to think American's were impatient...

Anyway, overall impressions are still good. I need to be more careful shooting at f2, the precision needed to focus f2 on the R2a is more then I was expecting, but also a little bit of it was me being slightly careless I guess. This lens gives a lower contrast similar to what you would expect from an older style Leitz lens where bright highlights are not completely blown and still retain a lot of details unlike my moderns Canon EF lenses when shooting in similar situations with the same film and metering technique where highlights will be so blown that there is nothing at all to salvage. The approach of this lens is good, im very pleased, and I have a feeling that negatives shot with this lens will hold up well in the darkroom with all the latitude that is offered. One thing that I seemed to notice is that the 3D effect is less with the bw film compared to the color shots., might be worth exploring later on.

In the meantime I feel like shooting more color photos, so thats what im going to be doing.

Regardless of the lens used, the photos are very very nice, Avotius! (and I can see the lens helped by staying out of the way -- I can see why people praise it)

Always nice to hear from your Gabriel. Thanks for the comments, I do indeed believe the best thing I lens can do is stay out of the way which is something my old Leitz Elmar just didnt do, but I will hold on to both lenses regardless because its all in good fun. I tried something a little different with some of my compositions, trying to add more people as elements to look around, duno if it worked though...
