Sean Reid tests 90mm RF lenses

Mike,

The use of film would mean taking a long time over the tests (assuming self D&P) and/or spending money making them. Digital is a lot easier, even if - as pointed out earlier - the vast majority of users are likely to be good old film junkies.

The 90 Elmarit-M consistently comes out as a gem. I bought a used one because it is a relatively cheap gem too (in Leica terms)! I got mine mint as new for less than 40% what thr Sonnar/90f2 APO go for. Seing as mine was for general field/street use I figured f2 was not required. I think the new Summarit 2.5 could be real contender too for size, weight, cost reasons; it only having real competition (remembering price) from the CV 90 3.5 and Elmarit M, assuming it stays in production. The 75 Summarit also only has real competition from the CV 75 2.5...or the cron at a massive price.

Sure - and Sean only uses digital so that's where his interests lie and efforts go. I'm fine with that (and I do subscribe to his site).

I think all the new lenses look interesting, although none seem like they'd fill any of my particular needs. (But if I should decide I want a 90 I might change my tune.) I hope they all prove to be great lenses, once test results and user reports start coming out.

All my rangefinder cameras capture on full 35mm frames, because they all use 35mm film.

While I understand that "cropped" tests don't tell the full story for those using the lenses with film cameras, the part of the story they do tell is still useful input. You just have to be aware of the things that aren't covered if they're likely to matter a lot to you (vignetting being an obvious example).

Yes of course! You can't say: "oh that lens is marvelous on my Digi-RF so it has to excellent on my film-RF". Thats selfdeception. But i guess Reid isn't telling his story in that way isn't he?
