Hi Folks,

Just wanted to drop a note of recommendation for all those M8 WATE users out there who don't want to drop their hoods in favor of a big filter arrangement.

I'd heard a lot about the WATE adapter from John Milich, but it was only upon receiving it did I appreciate the beautiful craftsmanship and precision of the adapter - not out of place on a Leica camera. With some very careful and patient handywork I've this evening managed to release the UV/IR filter glass from the E49 filter (very scary) and fit it nicely into the adapter; needless to say it all fits perfectly.

If tempted email jm@milich.com for information, and if UK-based and in need of the recommended LRSET tools I used, drop me an email also. One word of warning, the Leica E49 UV/IR cut filters are like golddust, I consider myself fortunate to have found one!

Instead of using an E67 filter which will not allow the attached hood to be used when coupled with basically a step-up adapter, John's adapter allows the use of the hood and the filter, and a smaller sized one also @ 49mm.
 
The Milich adapter really is excellent and looks as if it's an integral part of the lens. BUT remember it's for use when the Wide Angle Tri Elmar and original hood are mounted on the M8. The combination will cause vignetting on a full frame camera - M7/M6 etc. The adapter and it's 49mm filter glass are very effective protection for the bulbous front of the lens. What I don't know is if you get vignetting on a full frame camera with only the adapter (no hood) and it's internal filter mounted.

these adapters screw onto the WATE and come up on the same rotation stop; onto the adapter, you screw the stock hood; it also comes up on a rotation stop and is properly oriented.
the adpater receives the glass from either the Leica or B+W 49mm UV/IR filter (Heliopand glass does not fit). The glass is removed from the stock filter carrier and held in the adapter with a supplied threaded retaining ring.

Overal length of the lens/adpater/hood is about +1/4". finish is black anodized.

as mentioned, only practical with the M8

also available:
thread mount-to-M adapters with coding recesses (for C/V lenses)
filter/hood adapters for the C/V 12 and 15mm lenses (take standard 55mm or 39mm IR screw in filters)

John is the best! He has come up with a hugely important piece of add on equipment for the WATE. The 67 Leica adapter is a compromise but you can use the WATE on a film camera using it. instead I just unscrew the JLM ring and put the original hood back on when using the M7.
It took me a month to figure out how to get the 49 filter into the JLM ring, but that was my own fault as I didn't realize the small filter retaining ring was already there! Duh!
