Hi, I have an opportunity to buy this kit:
(an M2 with a 50 summicron). Supposed to be mechanically excellent, asking price is $850. Is this a good deal?

Difficult to say from that one image. No way to tell how the cosmetics are. If it is in good cosmetic shape, mechanically and optically excellent and the lens has good glass, I would buy it.

Like he said. Ask for cleaning marks on the lens (a few are OK on the front),
and the usual Leica stuff, i.e. shutter holes, RF separation, dings, etc.
Can be a good or a bad deal, depending on condition. Factoring in US 80 for
CLA at Youxin's is OK.
Roland.

Thank you HuubL and Roland. It sounds like a fair (as opposed to bargain) price assuming the hardware is in decent condition.
James, let me know if you want to go after this one, I am still not sure I want it. Plus, I think you might live closer to the seller than I

Guys, I think that's a very good price indeed.

I think that both those items can be found for less. IF if you do not mind waiting. I have seen m2's go for 4-500 usd on a regular enough basis, and the crons for about 250, and sometimes less. But if this kit has had a cla it could be a good deal.

If everything is in good working condition and the glass is clean you should get this camera. It is a fair price and a great leica kit. You might like to add a lens shade (these old lenses can flare strongly) and a simple light meter. I like the M2 for the ease that you can use a 35. Once you get used to this lens you can move into other focal lengths.
