The best 90 for a CL...

Hi!
I tested, few time ago a tele-elmarit..but i has a lot of scraches in the glass and i didn't took it...
Now GAS atacks me..and i'm thinking to take a 90 again..
please i need some help!😉

Which is the best option? Elmar-C?Rokkor?tele-elmarit?(i saw one in classifieds..but i'm from Spain..)CV 90?

If you don't need the speed, and considering the short rangefinder base speed may not really be an option anyway, the 90mm f4.0 Rokkor is hard to beat and relatively inexpensive. That's what I carry in my CL travel kit double-ended to a Canon 28/3.5 ltm lens with adaptor.

The 90 Rokkor or Elmar-C are made for this camera, and I don't know that you need anything faster. (The RF baseline of the CL is relatively short, so f4 might be as far as you want to push it anyway.

Don't know very much about 90mm lens but the CV ApoLanthar:

Now I rarely fail to focus adequately but there is time to learn (at least for a two left hands man like my)

The other reason to stick with either of the f/4 lenses or the f/3.5 CV is that you'll wind up with various degrees of viewfinder intrusion or even find you've blocked the rangefinder, depending on how big the 90mm is. I have the Elmar-C and it's a great lens. The CF might be better...can't say.
 
the great doubt that i have with Elmar-C or Rokkor is the f4..i take tha camera with me all time..and i use in different situation..(most of the time i push film to 1600..)
So i think that a faster lens will be better...but in the other side..i use the CL with 25 Skopar..(f4 too) and is a great lens for this camera..i don't know what to do!!

I used, in the past, a M Rokkor 90 mm f/ 4, a very good lens anyway. Now, this lens is used by my brother and i use a CV Apo Lanthar 90 mm with my Leicas: is indoubteley mutch better than M Rokkor.

What you will be bumping up against is the inherent limitations of the CL rangefinder and shallow depth of field. You're likely to get a fair number of exposures that just aren't critically focused. Otherwise Leitz might have marketed the CL with the existing Tele-Elmarit, which is in its physical dimensions essentially identical to the Elmar-C.
 
That´s it J. The short baselenght of viewfinder is too short. Lenses faster than the original elmar-c or the apo-lanthar will be difficult to focus well. That´s why I would not suggest to use an elmarit or summicron with a cl.

Be careful if you buy a Elmar-C: I bought 2 of them off of ebay, and returned them both. They both had fungus and/or haze in the interior element that was only visible by shining a flashlight through them(a suggestion I picked up here - thanks to whoever posted that!). So, I gave up on these 'mint' Elmar-c lenses. Still have not selected a replacement.
 
The 90mm Elmar-c and the Rokkor are the same lens. Both were made in Germany by Leitz. There's no optical difference. The Rokkor is a rebadged Elmar. It holds a place in Leitz history as the only Leica lens ever sold under another brand name.

It is true that the CL rangefinder lacks sufficient precision for a 90mm f/2.8 or faster. But that doesn't mean you can't use it on the CL. You can stop it down; or you can shoot wide open when the subject is at infinity or at least not too close to the camera--say, 50 or 60 feet I suppose.

This statement is only partially true in that its in reference to the first 90mm Rokkor for the Leitz Minolta CL. It does not apply to the CLE 90mm Rokkor which was made in Japan by Minolta. Although I have heard many state it the CLE Rokkor is not optically identical to the first version and Elmar-C. It shares a similar 4 element design but has more even center to edge sharpness at expense to slight center sharpness compared with the Leitz designed ones.

As others have mentioned you are pushing the limits a bit with the CL and at 90mm f2.8 at closer focusing distances. I would probably choose the Voigtlander 90mm f3.5 in this instance. A tiny bit faster, compact and modern lens multicoated lens.
