I was thinking of selling my Rokkor 40/2 lens as I don't use it as much as I used to since I got Planar ZM and Hexanon 50/2. It's a great lens, compact and has a nice feel to it. Very sharp yet......It just sits there. I don't use it almost at all anymore, yet, knowing how great it it, plus it goes so well with my 25/4P CV - I really can't bring myself to sell it.
Would you hold on to it, if you were in my place?
PS. I am more of a 50mm than 40mm shooter, I think.

kalokeri
larger than 35mm
As long as the money it will bring is not needed I would keep the lens.
The way you described your problem shows that you might regret the selling. So as long as it´s not necessary, keep it.

I also had an excellent 40 Rokkor, but sold it. It is everything you said, just a real gem of a lens and I often think about buying another because of that.
But I am happy with my 50s and 35s, so I don't. I just don't have a place for it in my kit.
I don't think I regret selling it, but the jury may still be out on that one. Sounds like you are in the same place I was/am. Right now I rather enjoy what I have rather than regret what I don't. If you sell, you will still have your hex and zm.
