Check with shadowfox, he uses the same lens in black.

This the latest (and probably last version of the venerable Elmar 50f2.8). This version has two things going for it, it a/ has a parallell mount so the aperture ring does not rotate when you focus and b/ it is a very good lens, as good as the Summicron (current version). In the mid range of apertures (f4 to f11) I find it better than my late Summicron. The fact that it collapses is a bonus, though I rarely use that function. It also has a very good hood, small and unobtrusive.
The price is not bad, as a new one is easily $750 now. Mine is a black one with a small hole drilled in the flange for a focussing "pin" as it, just like the latest Summicron. lacks a focussing tab.
It always bugged me that Leica called it Elmar rather than Elmarit which for decades was their denotation of f2.8 lenses. However, they claimed that the kinship with the original Elmar f3.5 justified it!

I've got one of those, and I really like it (and I actually think it looks good too). And to make it even better, it only cost me £165 ($330) in near mint condition

Roland, you're quite up-to-date with your who-has-whatferider said:Check with shadowfox, he uses the same lens in black.

Yes, I have one of these "Nissan", the reasons I went for this one has been explained by Tom A. in his post above. I have used this lens wide open indoor, it produces amazing sharpness.
I love the fact that this lens collapses, so far I have only two beautiful, well-exposed shots of blurry circles with the lens un-extended
This is what it looks like when "plugged-in"

I am determined to make this my only M lens until I can sense its limitations.

yes it is...ok, I'm not updated obviously! I think it looks like a FSU model of it! But why Leica and not Leitz? I don't get it...

Amen to that. Very...untraditional?...from a very tradition-oriented company? Odd, anyway.

You may have a while to wait before you can justify another lens purchase if you stick to that line!

That's the idea, my good man, that's the idea.
One Leica camera and lens, if that's not enough for me, I have some other problems to worry about.

Well ... you are a fellow OM/M user so you should not be surprised that
you get special attention
Plus you didn't really keep your M4P + Elmar a secret, did you now ?

I am happy to say that I no longer have to limit myself to one lens, but when I bought my first M3 many years ago it took more than ten years to be able to afford a second lens. I used the 50mm collapsible Summicron for an awful lot of shots and never knew I was missing much of anything. Go for it!!!

LOL! I guess not
Truth is, I am dang proud to have that Leica because it's not an impulse buy, and it marked the end of my rather pointless pursuit of "better gear to improve my photography". Instead, I can now concentrate in producing worthy pictures.

I have only used it with the hood on. Flare has not been an issue anyhow. It's not like the old 3,5 "classic" Elmar, it's too good for that.
