locking exposure in Vuescan

I scan a few strips (V700 flatbed), mark one of them and press "lock exposure".
when I change the crop area the exposure changes
what am I doing wrong?

Whenever I have trouble getting something to work in Vue Scan I download the newest version and then everything seems to be OK. For some reason it developes 'glitches' and a fresh down load solves all. I hope this helps a bit, Andrew.
