I just became the owner of my first Barnack- a post war IIIc. Boy are they small! Anyway, I need a proper lens. Temporarily I purchased 2 Industar-61 l/d's from the fsu. Brand new! but not serviceable. Thanks to Kim Coxon's instructions, I overhauled them both which included cleaning, actually filing, sanding and lapping the internal parts, lubing and collimating. Thay are now smooth as silk. I still want the "proper" lens for the camera. What should I get? Thanks. Stu
 
Buy the good ole f3.5 50mm Elmar..........it was`nt Leica`s mainstay lens for almost 40 years for nothing, fun and compact, keeps the camera light as well andas for the results....that`s why the Leica "glows"

Good clean examples can be had for around $125 🙂

PS: Filters and stuff for the Elmar are always on that *Evilbay* auction site 😉

Stu, just a thought, if you already have an Elmar in M mount, wouldn't this be a good opportunity to try out the other lenses?

If I have a Leica LTM, I'd probably try out a Summar for that very distinct vintage look in the pictures.
 
Yes, if you have an M mount Elmar, try a f2.0 50mm Summitar or a Summar.....


If you really want to get daring, look for an - HC f2.0 50mm Tokyo Nippon Kogaku (Nikon) in LTM

You can find them reasonable sometimes on the evilbay, I have a nice used one from Roland and it`s a little workhorse, compact, light and rigid - an all around great lens 🙂

Like you I've just bought my first Barnack too - also a post-war IIIC. Mine's about to get tested with an Industar 22 and Jupiters 8, 11 & 12. I'll be after an Elmar at some point though, I think.
 
Just yesterday I did some test shots between Elmar and I-61 both at f2.8. My conclusion: both are good, very good and I cannot see the difference in rendering between them. I uploaded 2 images for you to compare at:

My Elmar is quite hazy which explains why I-61 is sharper and has a bit more contrast but tonality is very similar at least for my eyes.
 
Everybody needs a Summar. 🙂 My III should arrive today or tomorrow and the Summar will be taken off the IIf and put on it... it's a lovely lens and I am very very pleased with the results. (The IIf will wear the 90/4 Elmar for now and the Summitar I just won on evilbay once Youxin CLA's it.)

and........funny I haven`t used a Summar in all my years shooting with Leica`s 😱 !

I just sold one (a 1937) off my 1945 "Half Race" IIIC and just worked out a deal for another tonight (a 1935 one) on a Chrome Leica III
*the camera and lens are already promised to someone*

I`ll finally keep a Summar when I can find a very late (1939) production version that`s clean and
coated 😀

...all of us who just got their first Barnack/IIIc as iquestions and solutions pop up all the time.

I tried the Industar 22 collapsible with good results. I just have to fetch my last roll of 400CN I made using the Serenar 50mm/1,8

My main issue was the low contrast rangefinder. Right now I use homemade red filter which works ok but as soon as possible I'll get a new beamsplitter.

Maybe I'll get a summar or even a summitar fro X-mas.

A great camera I am happy to ahve one now.

Keep it running those useful infos

alliv, maybe it's my eyes deceiving me, but I saw the Elmar as being noticably sharper than the I-61. Especially when I focus on your boy's hairline, I can see the hair clumps detail better on the Elmar picture.
