Do you prefer round hoods or rectangular hoods on lens?

Having said I prefer rectangular, most of mine are round as that is what is most readily available. But I have the little 35mm Summicron (V4) which has a beautiful rectangular hood and think it looks tops and works well. Mostly I use the Leica round vented one as it works on many 39mm diameter lenses

Rect is best if small. Then straight round ones, Never the funnel shaped ones

Allways round, preferably metal and thread mounted (less risks). Vented if possible for normal lens.

Most of my lenses rotate when focusing, then a squared hood is unadvisable: they´ll be blocking the VF.

Appearances are irrelevant to me. If I could, I would have a rectangular hood for each of my lenses. Unfortunately some of them rotate when focussed. Besides, rectangular hoods are not so easy to come by as round ones. Easily the best hood I have ever had was a SOOPD for a Summitar.

Rectangular are most efficient, there's a guy who posts on pnet with the mathematics of it all. Personally I mostly use ASPH lenses now so flare isn't an issue and my use of hoods is for protection only. I use 3rd. party round hoods.

With my engineer hat on I vote rectangular, because the hood can be smaller, and just as effective. I wish my zuikos had rectangular hoods. But I'll take what I can get (at a reasonable price) and what won't fall off and get lost.

Yup! Cosmetically they fit the lines of the body better. And since they are more effective, why not use the rectangular if available and practical? (obviously not with a rotating lens).

Easily the best hood I have ever had was a SOOPD for a Summitar.

Now that is a rectangular hood. 🙂 I use mine on my Summitar, but I admit I have searched for more compact hoods, especially since the lens itself is so compact.

Except for the barn door for the Summitar, all my hoods are round, but I really like the looks of a black M with a 35 Summicron with black rectangular hood.

As mentioned before, round vented! Has a retro sexy look, functionally, the one that came with the lens, VC 28 f3.5

I also use the hoods for protection so whatever comes with the lens - it's a mix. Some of the Leica hoods are fiddly though, the one on the 35/1.4 ASPH can be tricky to use.

RF hoods are problematic because anything large enough to be effective will likely partially block the finder.
On my SLRs I prefer something that "self stores" - either a reversible rigid hood or collapsible rubber one.

Cosmetically I prefer the rectangular hoods but I've actually had problems using these on my 35mm Summicron v.4 so tend to use an older round vented hood. This lens is constructed such that the lens cluster screws into the focussing mount where it is held in place by a fairly ineffectual grub screw and some thread lock. I've found that the corners of the rectangular hood tend to catch on things and so start unscrewing the lens cluster whereas this doesn't happen with one of the circular hoods.

I must be the exception, as personally I hate hoods, for the sole reasons of added bulk and impact on portability. With an M, I like the slim streamlined package, and hate to change that, be it by using larger lenses or adding hoods. On dslr's I can just about tolerate them on occasion, but then its a bulky kit in the first place, hood or no hood.

The rectangular hoods look cool though 🙂
