it won't work TTL on your RD-1. Dunno if it has A settings (using sensor on the flash, if there is one, to calculate exposure)

TTL is useless with the R-D1 and the absence of tilt & swivel capabilities is the best way to get awful portraits IMHO. I would try an inexpensive flash like the SB20 below or any other one with tilt capabilities at least personally.

I used my SB-28 on my old RD-1 on A setting worked well. In My Opinion.... NO heavy flash should be installed on the RD-1 or CV rangefinder cameras as the rangefinder adjustment are so close to the shoe... knock off or bang that heavy flash and say goodbye to rangefinder calibration!!!!
