Unf*ing Believable! Sinar 6x6 Digital SLR

-+Funny, one of these came standard with the yacht I just purchased, or rather with the helicopter that came standard with the yacht. Now I can take super sharp pictures of the topless bathers when I fly over Cannes! Yeah.

I will stick with my used cameras and lenses.
For $32,000, I can do better things in life than buying a camera. Any camera.

Unless I'm missing something, take note that the system is digital- and film-based. Clearly, Sinar isn't dumb enough to put all its eggs in the megapixel basket, even though that's the main emphasis here. Taken as thus, 35 grand (wanna bet how much of that goes for the digital back?) isn't all that outrageous, given the usual going price for Kodak/Phase One and other offerings. Catalog houses and the like will eat it up, as it makes a lot of sense in those scenarios. For shooters like us? It's totally daft.

(Edit: My bad...looks like this baby is strictly digital.)

Does it? I read on the Sinar page:

Sinar said:
The Sinar Hy6 is not only an analog/digital hybrid system, but also allows for free choice of format: Square 6x6 or rectangular 6x4.

I suspect it may be able to accept digital backs that are compatible with cameras that have film backs, and might therefore be able to use the film backs from those camera systems.

Sooner--you might enjoy this thread (not sure if it requires registration) started by a yacht photographer who works from helicopters and is looking into a Leaf or Sinar MF DSLR--

Philipp & David: Well, I would hope it would take film backs as well. Seems a shame to me to restrict all this photo firepower to digital, however high-end.

I don't think it's that complex a problem. For instance, I know there are Hassy-compatible digital back adapters for various Linhof cameras that also work with Hassy film backs.

I have seen posts by professionals who been using the e22 digital back for existing MF cameras. The cost is about $22000.

The Sinar and Rollei are high-end tools which will be used by professionals who demand the highest quality, and versatility.

A busy studio could pay for one quickly.

RFF members shocked at the price of a camera?

Now THAT'S unbelievable.

According to the Calumet mailer I just got, a Sinar eMotion 75LV digital back costs $27,000 all by itself, while the same back plus a Hy6 camera body and 80/2.8 Xenotar is $32,500.

You know things in photography have gotten kind of weird when the back is the big-ticket item, and the camera body and lens are just comparatively inexpensive accessories. It's kind of like checking out the window sticker on a new Porsche and seeing that the engine is $49.95, the body and chassis are $35, the interior is ten bucks, and the left and right door handles cost $65,000 apiece. As a package, you still get your money's worth in terms of performance... it's just the distribution that's a bit hard for us old-timers to get our heads around...

"I'm sure they will sell thousands of these at $30,000 a copy. Camera pricing is simply becoming disconnected from reality."

"I will stick with my used cameras and lenses.

two of the sharpest comments i've read here...
