anyone want to help out this kid

I cannot see the post, presumably asking for a camera, because it's been deleted.

Didn't a whole lot of folks in RFF give BACK ALLEY a camera a couple of years ago?
 
Jon, why bring this up in relation to this thread? This kid is asking for a camera for doing nothing. Joe did not ask for a camera, it was an initiative of the membership of RFF to collect $ to by a camera as a gift of thanks for the work Joe had put into moderating RFF. Once Joe became aware of it, he even asked Jorge to cancel this effort.

Your post, along with your "gearheads are not into meaningful photography like real photographers" statement, and your posted list of qualified photographers, indicates to me that you have some kind of underlying issue with RFF. Why not discuss it openly?

You're a positive contributer to RFF Jon, especially with your weekly pics threads. So why these little digs and put downs? Lay it on the table Jon.
 
I don't think Jon meant that in a bad way at all. I can't see the original post either, so I can't comment on how 'cheeky' the lad was being.

Anyone got it saved?
 
Hey, I'm in the phoenix area. I've got 20 or so film cameras laying about. If the kid wanted something basic to learn on, I'd be inclined to help...but a M6?
 
I cant see the add now, it’s been deleted, but I’ve witnessed acts of great generosity on this forum in the past, the early posts on this thread seemed more judgmental than generous however
 
This reminds me of a post on another forum where a guy asked for a medium format camera. He was very specific and wanted an SLR with interchangeable backs and lenses. I'm pretty sure he was talking about a Hasselblad 🙂
 
I'm disturbed by this thread.
I didn't see the original post, so can't judge if it was a cheeky scam or a naive request from someone who knows the utility but not the market value of what he asks for.
It's always possible that there is a need for help with photographic equipment in Afghanistan. It's also possible that it's a scam.
I wouldn't give to every beggar on the street, but I would never insult or berate them. In this unfortunate world some beg because they must.

Forget the M6, but IMHO a gift/loan of something more modest would cause you to feel very good because, you had either: (1) started someone on a lifetime in the photography experience, or (2) exposed him as fraud looking for a handout. :angel: Even if it is no. 1 and he grows disinterested, you will still have done a good thing. Maybe his problem is the he is uncertain about how much he really wants to become a photographer and therefore is reluctant to blow the bucks for nice equipment to learn on?😕 In another life, I was a struggling college student with a wife and a baby daughter and several part-time jobs. Even though I used my dirt bike to commute to my many jobs, I was racked with the guilt that I received emense pleasure from riding it. Don't know anymore about the guy than any of you guys, but..........

Sitemistic has stated the issue very well. He is correct about people lossing all sense of caution and common sense over some tear jerker story on the internet. I have witnessed many times in my family. (We are bunch of bleeding hearts looking for a cause to champion!) But, then again, maybe he never espected a M6, but only wanted a nice camera to play with for a while. Then again, it could have been a college class assignment to see what responces he would get from such an extravagant plee? If the ad has been pulled, we can assume that he either received his gift, or it was a scam and was descovered by the paper's editors.

Life is uncertain, eat dessert first.
 
Hey, guys, what's with the soapbox? We have no idea what happened. His post and its deletion are like a Rorshack test - we each see what we want in it, revealing more about ourselves than the petitioner.
